I've heard (up close and personal) many people sing this song, amateur and professional. Nobody -- nobody -- could sing it with the honesty and texture that Bob Shane did. His vocal colors compelled me to feel the chill of the waters of the Zuider Zee and the warmth of the love of Margaret - the emptiness of youth lost and the fulness of mature love. And, like you, I thought of my parents and now myself.
