Also a few years ago, my wife and I, as volunteers for the Eighth Step, a Schenectady NY folk venue, had the job of driving Michael to the Albany airport to catch his next flight. We stopped off to buy him lunch. He was appreciative but very quiet…until the subject of the Kingston Trio’s version of the song came up. He immediately grew loquacious, and we talked until he was close to missing his flight. That day was one of my favorite folk music memories.
A few minutes ago, my wife read on Facebook that Michael is in hospice because of cancer. I haven’t felt this sad in a very long time. For years I've sung that song in most of my gigs. From now on, it will be in EVERY gig.
