Rankings?

why do we only have preseason ranking for some of the classifications?

Different people do different classifications. Some may wait until the season starts to see where people are weight wise and school wise.

Generally speaking, the rankings have waited until around Dec 1 to post, but I have put out a request to the rankers to try to get me some pre-season rankings a little earlier this year. I have a couple in my possesion that I will post over the next couple of days.

Do you guys collaborate at all with the Washington Wrestling Network on Instagram? They posted their own rankings for the top 5 wrestlers in each weight and division and I noticed that they rated some upcoming freshman wrestlers pretty highly based on what they did in wrestling clubs. Do you guys take in account those statistics or is it mostly just based on the wrestlers high school resume?

The Washington Wrestling Report (WWR) Rankings from THIS site have been around and used by the media for the past 20+ years. I think the Washington Wrestling Network has been around for about 6-12 months, but I could be wrong on that time frame. These are two totally separate entities, and have no current affiliation or collaboration, but I do enjoy their podcasts. I have known the principles of that group since they were kids or high school wrestlers. Good guys.

The rankings here at the WWR are based on high school resume. When I personally did the rankings many years ago, I took into account their USAW kids wrestling results to rank highly accomplished freshmen that had potential to make waves. It was easy for me because I was coaching and reffing with our national teams so I personally knew who the up and comers were. Our rankers now don't rank freshmen until they start to knock off wrestlers that are ranked above them. If their team competes at bigger tournaments then they get moved into the rankings based on their current HS success. The cream rises to the top of the rankigs rapidly if they are a hard charger.

I understand your process. I don't have much stock in the early pre-season rankings because a large percentage of the kids are not even at the same weight. Rankings will take shape a week or two into the season. As far as freshmen go, I think I can confidently make a couple predections. The following freshmen will be state champions this year and will be a force to rekon with in the state of Washington:

1.Brycen Dawley(Fargo all american, on big board for 2024-25 freshman nationally) -state champ at 113 or 120 whatever weight he chooses to go
2.Lazarus McEwen(fargo all american, pre-season national champ, ranked 12th in the nation at HS 106 currently)- 3a state champ at 106
3.Nery Rivas: 2a 106 state champ
4. Arcadius Cruz: 2a 113# state champ
5. Adrian Windsor: 3a 113 or 120# state champ whichever weight he chooses to go

If you disagree please responds and tell me why you think different. I just don't see anyone beating these guys.

I have no dog in the fight and I have no reason to disagree with your predictions. If they are that good then those wrestlers will start to show up in the rankings once they knock off higher ranked wrestlers. Lots of changes and adjustments occur over the next 4-6 weeks. Twenty+ years ago my son was a Fargo AA coming into his freshman year. He wasn't ranked until later in the year when he finally got to wrestle some higher ranked wrestlers. Just kind of how things work.

That is the nice thing about this board. People can come on and talk about who is doing what, who the studs are, who the pretenders are, etc. Creates interest as the season progresses.

Yeah great pops let these kid's just wrestle, they will be in the rankins by first update, then get ready for them to be eating alive by haters. Tdome rankings is all that matters. And a few of the kids on this list will be burnt out by junior year if there parental figures don't chill out and stay off the sauce.....

Pops? These are not my kids. Does it look like they are related? They go to different schools and different clubs. I’m simply a follower of our washington wrestlers and can tell you these kids are solid. I’m wagering to bet all of them will be 4 timers. Keep those names on your radar and you will see them rise to the top as the season progresses. No need to get upset because I have an opinion. Do a little research on various platforms and wrestling media and we can discuss how you think those weights will pan out. It’s fun to discuss these things without getting defensive.

I could see Dawley not being a 4x WA champion… only because I can see him going to OTC or somewhere like Wyo Sem before he graduates.

Nah, he is a great kid, I'm sure his parental figures will have him completely burnt out by end of sophomore season and he will choose to stay put.

Freshmen don’t make it in preseason ranking because they go off last years state placers.
