Loaded Brackets - History

Started thinking about brackets with a bunch of state champs & placers in them.
I came up with a few. If you can think of others, let me know.
This bracket has 14 finalists, 11 titles and 24 total placings:
2016 3a 106
1) 10 - Brandon Kaylor (Bonney Lake) 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st
2) 9 - Blake Haney (Mt. Spokane) 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st
3) 9 - Austin Almaguer (Kamiakin) 3rd, 3rd, 1st, 1st

That is pretty crazy! Very impressive. Did Brenden Chaowanapibool go onto wrestle in college? Not trying to bring up any bashing, just curious.

He went to the Air Force Academy Prep School for one year. Didn't attend the academy.

2A 2005 103 always comes to mind, I don’t think it’s as loaded, but several multiple time placers and champs in that bracket.

I remember 2006 2A 112 lb was a rough weight class and the bracketing was lopsided. 5 of the 8 placers came from one half. Didn't have the fire power of the above weight but the seeding definitely loaded up the bottom half.

Yes! That was a lopsided bracket!!! I just went back and looked. Didn’t they reseed that several times too?

They reseeded a handful of 2A brackets, as far as the other classifications I'm not sure. I think alot of it was the "super region" they formed with all the east side schools in one tournament. Top 7 went to state but they split the 7 into 2 "regions" it caused a good chunk of league opponents meeting in the first round at state.

Cole Daurie (Marysville pilchuck) placed 4th and 3rd from that bracket so 26 total placers.

4A 138 18-19? If I remember correctly, there were a few returning state champs/ finalists heading into the post season.

2002 4a 119 was good with 12 finalists, 7 titles and 25 placings, with 6 different champs:

was referring to the 2004 4A state tournament, specifically the quarterfinal matchup between Mikey and Vombaur. It's important to remember that, at the time, there were only three 4x state champions and relatively few 3x champions. Vombaur, a D1 athlete and a standout high school wrestler, only won one state title. Mikey, also a D1 athlete, had an incredible youth career, winning everything from kids' national championships to Fargo national titles and multiple placings. Despite his impressive resume, he only ended up with two state championships.

Lester Brown was a physical freak of nature , and Peter Barnes, though never a state champion, was one of the best wrestlers in the state to never win it , with wins over countless top-tier opponents.

As for the 2002 4A 119-pound weight class—man, that was a stacked bracket! Luke Kuhn came in undefeated and as the Tri-State champ, but he ended up taking 7th! And keep in mind, this was back when Tri-State was a serious tournament, one of the toughest in the western region.

2003 4A 103 and 4A 112 would blow those other aforementioned lower weight brackets out the water, The accolades may not match but the talent was undeniable

I remember the 2003 4A 103 very clearly.

Lots of twists and turns and surprises throughout those two days. Highs and lows.

Steve, I agree with you that Peter Barnes was one of the best wrestlers in our state to not have a state title. He won everything but that.

2006:4a 135 and 4a 140 were crazy stacked as well.

Gilbertson and tim whitley are also right up there as two of the best wrestlers to never win the title. They would likely both be 4x champs in this day and age

Four of the wrestlers in that bracket also placed top three in Fargo Nationals during their wrestling career. Starks, Gilbertson, Swartz and Jones.
