state seeding

I am looking for some clarity and details on the seeding criteria for the state tournament. I understand that all results need to be put into trackwrestling throughout the season and that those results will be used to seed the state bracket. That is all I know. What other criteria is used? Thank you.

Not looking forward to this new process and procedure for Wa St. wrestling post season. In my opinion, straight to state and the new seeding has once again “ watered down “ the level of comp and makes our process more difficult than it has to be. Disappointed that our coach”s association cut regionals out of our process. Hopefully the coaches that voted for this mess will advocate and vote to change back to a regional system asap. Been coaching in Wa for 24 years and I am disappointed in the direction we have been , and are , going.

Agreed! Attending the state tournament was an event of the ages! Amazing wrestling, parade of champions, the big boards...etc. It has been watered down and also less of a spectacular event for fans and upcoming wrestlers. It seems like each year Washington wrestling hits new lows.

The WIAA is responsible for the change, not the Coaches Association. For years, a majority of coaches have consistently voted to structure state this way. While you may see this as "watering down" the competition, others recognize it as a system that ensures all the best wrestlers can participate in the tournament. The goal is to give more athletes a fair shot at making it to state, and your version of "watering down" might just be making sure the best talent actually gets to compete. As for the new way off seeding, anything has to be better than what we had before. It was the only tournament of the year that was not seeded.

I'm not going to speculate as to all the reasons why the WIAA expanded the state tournament, but it always seems to come down to the argument that there are tougher districts and there are weaker districts. The tougher districts want to make sure their kid gets to state so they have a shot at placing so this will inevitably lead to expansion. There are always degrees when it comes down to who people think "deserve" to go to state, but it seems as if enough is enough. When I was in high school, which is likely close to when Coach Feist was in high school, there were only three divisions. It was tougher to get to state and once you were at state, you had to place top 6. That meant that if you were in the consolation bracket, you had to weigh in the second day and had to win that first match to place. Several of my teammates lost that first consolation match and never placed. To make matters worse, we only had 13 weight classes. Today, we have 5 divisions and place 8 per 14 weight classes. This means that instead of 234 placers, we now place 560 wrestlers in the boys division.
There is also the issue of Title 9 and in order to make things equitable for boys and girls, the girls now have 4 divisions. I'm all or opportunity, but does anyone else see how this slope gets slippery really quickly? Washington state high school wrestling has definitely gotten watered down.
Here is another sobering fact, California with the country's biggest population of almost 40 million has one state champion per weight. Washington has almost 8 million. They have 5 times our population, but place 2.5% of what we place. Adjusted for population, Washington has 1 state wrestling placer per 14000 people +/_. California has one placer for every 2,857,000 people, giving us about 200 times the number of placers per capita. That means their state placing is 200 times harder to accomplish if you just use population as the standard.
It's funny to me that wrestlers and wrestling coaches are some of the first to argue that we shouldn't be giving out participation trophies to everyone, but we now have what we have today because lots of coaches were in favor of it. I sure hope we are done with expansion, at least for a while.

I am curious as to if you guys felt the State Tournament in 2018-2019 was watered down? This was the year we went to 32 team due to "harsh" winter closing down many schools for almost the entire week of regionals. I honestly felt like this was one of my favorite tournaments at the dome. My overall takeaway was not "man that was watered down" at all, if anything I remember leaving day one thinking about how many awesome matches we got to see earlier in the tournament. I dont remember hearing the watered down narrative at the time, though it may have been around, I just dont remember it after the tournament.

For reference, I was in 4A at the time and these are the placers. Definitely seem just as tough as any other year and some of the weights are absolutely stacked- The match between Michalski and Yacapin is my all time favorite match from the Dome and everything that happened at 138 at the dome that year was so fun to watch

I like the way it was done before because it was very straight forward.
When dealing with Track and match ups it might not be as cut and dried.
The new system will allow a kid that has a great year to be seeded higher than they would've been in the old system, when they may not have any seeding criteria.
Freshman now can be seeded where in the past they were not.
At the end of the day, I hope Track gets it right. We'll see this year and hopefully adjustments will be made if necessary.

This is where we are headed. I agree that some tough regions get some kids that get left out and they could place at state. But for the most part a lot of these first couple rounds will be quick due to lack of talent. However I do like they will seed the state tournament through track wrestling and who you have beat. If a 3rd at district kid beat a district champion from across the state during the season than the district champion should not be ranked over a kid that he has lost to. It will be a true seeding which will take longer but will get us the best matchups further into the tournament. The coaches that do not like this are the ones that do not use track wrestling and will now be forced to in order to seed their wrestlers

Schools with less funding for the wrestling team will get a short end of the stick on the seeding. Not every team can attend tournaments across the state and are limited to how much they can spend on tournaments.

Okay, but my question was not who likes or dislikes the new post season format. My question is what is the criteria for seeding the state tournament. That should be clear to all coaches and AD's before we start the season.

I think they are going to use the PIN ratings that Trackwrestling has. I am not clear though if it will use just the matches during the HS season or if it will use matches outside of the HS season.

Definitely should NOT be using anything outside of high school season. Also this is stupid! Bring back regionals. Thanks a lot wrestling coaches from weak districts who voted this through!!! This nonsense is on you.

It will use criteria from the high school season that has been entered into track. If your coach does not enter info than your kid will not be seeded

Our sport seems to attract dumb people. If my kid beat your kid, I'm going to put it in track. Only one of us have to have it in for it to be a record in track. Its not just based on your record too. There are other things like past placing etc... You could have a great record and not get seeded all that high.
