Miller

Congrats to Cody Miller, but had he had a freshman season he would still only be a 3x state champ imagine what Mateo De la pena, Steele Starren, Austin Villanueva, Andrew Macias, Qveand many more would of done to him. Wrestling seems to be in a decline as of late. We don’t got the Ryan Wheelers, Robby Vaughns, Chase Tebbets, Jack Latimer, Haiden Drury, Yusief Lillie, Brandon Kaylor, Franky Almaguer, Andy Aguilera, Kyler Romero, Jose Campos, Tanner Craig, and many more. Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of studs today still just not as many and as good I would say.

My point being he wouldn’t of been state champ during that time really talented kid but wrestling is in a slump. I was on that 138lb bracket I was hoping to repeat as champion but there was too many state champs on that bracket. That same year 4A was crazy stacked, 126 as well Yakapin was the champ but that bracket consisted of Andrew Macias, Drew Roberts who is now a D1 wrestler for Minnesota, and Austin M

All 4-timers had to of won as a freshman their Freshman year, otherwise we’d have no 4-timers. Agreed. Adding classifications and placing up to 8, now straight to state with no regionals and a 32 man bracket- Wa wrestling and the need to celebrate sub par wrestling has contributed to our decline and lack of competitive programs.

I don’t recall sumner having a state champ in that time frame.

What's funny is Steve Davis just launched that website with the history of wrestling at most schools. Funny sumner definitely never had a state champion even remotely close to those years. Cody Miller would eat this fraudster for lunch. You took 4th or 5th, were beaten by guys better than you, now those guys are immortalized in your brain as the best ever. Cody Miller is the shi**. It is what it is bro, you need to quit living in the past.

I have had a site online for 15 + years. I make mistakes and I encourage people to correct me or give me additional information. If I can find brackets, placer sheets, newspapers, etc to back it up, I change it. If I missed a state champ let me know here on the board or by email.

None of today's guys would hold a candle to 3x state champ Brian Shute. The due was a beast and carried logs on his shoulders up the Mead High School stadium steps to train.

He would have finished undefeated, but he got robbed by the ref in a dual (video evidence clearly showed his shoulder was off the mat and the ref made several bad calls during the match). To be fair, the guy who beat him, Loeden Swain, was a fine wrestler (who would also beat any of today's soft wrestlers).

Hey Steve, can you clarify if Brian went on to win the state title that year after his loss? I can't seem to find any records but the documentary was very good.

Log scene was in Joe Albi Stadium which is no longer there and Legend has it that Shute never wrestled again after that loss.

Cody Miller was JV his freshman year. He lost to Drake Thompson at purple and gold dual.

It was more competitive how many state champs were on Cody Millers bracket?? And look at how many state champs were in 4A brackets before, that 138 bracket in 2019 is the perfect example those guys had no where else to guy so they had to stay and wrestle each other had they moved up they would have to wrestle a unbeatable Ryan Wheeler or John Sowers. Moving down you had jack latimer and Chase Tebbets

Yeah. Sure. And you'll have some dude throw up a 2012 bracket that'll put that to shame, and say you had it easy. And then the 2004-ish bracket where a 2x state champ and fargo runner-up didn't even place will make an appearance. And then a bunch of dudes will start going on about the 90s.

Nothing special about your era. No need to bash kids now because you feel like you had it harder.

Cody has always made it look easy. He has been dominating his whole life. Pinning and grinning. That kid was always so kind and fun to be around. I couldn’t be happier for him and his family. Congratulations Cody.

cody miller didn’t wrestle a single tournament out of the state great in state wrestler but don’t compare him to any of the kids placing at fargo, super 32 or any national tournament like that because he didn’t place at any of those his toughest opponents were also not good out of state washington has got so weak it’s sad. some great wrestlers that are good for washington but no where else

You start off congratulating this young man to turn around and stick a knife in his back. I'm sure Cody is not worry about anyone you named on this list nor cares about what you think of him. He didn't go out of town nor wrestled in FARGO or Super 32! I'm sure he's not screaming from the roof tops that he's the best ever in Washington State either. The crazy thing is will any wrestlers coming out of this state ever be good enough? You will always have a troll coming out to stomp out their fire so I guess it goes with the territory. We cant just congratulate the kid for going undefeated and save the I climbed a two mile uphill road going to and from school BS. Any wrestler that comes from this state that goes to college for wrestling represent Washington wrestling and we have enough naysayers around the country to be kicking our own in the nuts.

Every wrestler is a sum of many moving parts.

There is not the time, nor access to all the relevant details to properly do the comparison you are attempting to make.

Things to consider:

1. HighSchool Program Quality
2. Club Experience and Quality
3. Annual match counts, seasonal vs non-seasonal

No. 2 & 3 are huge and play a major role in any wrestler developing into State Champ caliber.

Looking at many of those names, I see alot of wrestlers who were full timers throughout their early youth through all 4 years of HighSchool. They wrestled year round throughout the country.
Their annual match counts no doubt hit the 100-150 numbers.

I believe Cody's Post Season Match count through all of HS is a fat ZERO.

Cody Was a seasonal HS wrestler who left club wrestling before middle school.

This kid dominated in High School through a combination of Hard work, Skill, Athleticism, and uncanny grit. Mental toughness.

He never ducked and competed at and won the toughest tournaments available to HS wrestlers. GUT CHECK, ROSE CITY

On more than one occasion, in a major tournament, he stunned the entire venue with a late 3rd period rally in the last 5 seconds to win a match that by all measures was going to be a loss.

There is no quit in the young man.

What he did in 4A wrestling is extraordinary.

He deserves every ounce of credit bestowed on him.

His D1 offers were a big fat 0 too. Congrats kid, but he retired from wrestling for a reason. Haiden Drury went D1 because of his out of school accomplishments same with Franky Almaguer, Qveli, Yusief Lillie and others.

Zero D1 offers would not surprise me in the least. I would hope the young man wasn't under the impression he was on that kind of path. WA HS wrestling alone, with a couple rare exceptions, is not going to bring any offers from that level.

I would assume his coaches and mentors would have made that clear through his HS years. WA HS wrestling isn't even on the radar for pretty much all of those programs. You MUST go to DOC B, Or Super32, or FARGO, or Virginia Beach HS nationals, or all of the above.

He would have to break himself out somehow from the State, which clearly there is no record of.

What he did was still impressive.

What he did is very impressive. He went undefeated in his high school career! So what if he didn't want to wrestle in college? Most high school wrestlers don't. Maybe he has bigger plans in life than what he did in high school? I have been around this sport for more years than I want to say and have traveled all over the USA for wrestling. Fargo, Cadet Duals, Junior Duals, Kids Nationals, NHSCA Senior Nationals, etc. Yes, if you want to get noticed then you need to go to those but maybe he didn't need that? Maybe he just wrestled in state for the joy of wrestling without worrying about wrestling after high school?

Long rant but over the years I get a little tired of people coming on and putting THEIR expectations of success onto someone else that has a totally different playbook for life. What he did was very impressive to me. I wish him well in the next phase of his life.

I have also been around wrestling for a long time, (Not as long as you Dave, LOL). I have watched and studied the best wrestlers Washington has had to offer for the past 20 something years. Cody is a special and rare talent that decided he was going to pursue other interests after HS, (His own admition). I think we should all revel in his achievement as a HS wrestler and count ourselves lucky we were able to witness it. As far as who is the top guy at that weight it will always be up for debate and makes for some spirited message board fodder. I would suggest that its ok to debate it but lets not disparage the young man to make a point. He is a great wrestler and looks to the future to try to be great at something else in life besides what he did in HS. Great job Cody, and good luck in your future endeavors, go be great at life kid.

You're lucky if you haven't been around wrestling as long as I have. It probably means you are younger than I and that is a good thing your you.

My first involvement was in 1968! It has been an enjoyable ride with me wearing a lot of different hats over the years. Wrestler, dad, coach, official, web host, message board moderator, ranker, etc. Never a dull moment and hopefully I have many good years left in me to watch and assist the next generation.

Miller ran over the majority of his opponents like a freight train. He didn’t wrestle ANYONE in 143 matches that wrestled in Fargo, etc,? Hard to believe. This kid is an unbelievable athlete and if anyone doesn’t think he’d succeed at the D1 level if he fully applied himself is nutty. He reminds me of Jon Jones… just a freak athlete who has a unique build and stupid strength to go along with it.

Great job Cody. We all loved watching you wrestle throughout high school!

That’s the point he wouldn’t apply himself. He coasted on his natural god given abilities. 😊 And he is awesome, but being undefeated doesn’t make him the best current wrestler in Washington state.

Many others. It’s a bummer this turned into smash on Cody, but claiming he is best pound for pound is just silly. And it brings out the haters. If you have weaker brackets it doesn’t mean you are a better wrestler because you placed higher at state. Gut check for example had some STACKED weights 132 was one of them, kids that were better wrestlers didn’t place, where kids at weaker weights classes placed because bracket wasn’t so stacked. What he did was amazing undefeated for three full seasons, but we have better wrestlers in our state.

This web site is a business that makes it's money on kids names. The rankings and forum discussions draw traffic based on kids names. Furthermore, other business enterprises reference this site (i.e local newspapers) and it's rankings. They are in business to make money too.

The Washington Wrestling report should cut the kid a check for the beat down he took and then delete the thread. Unless of course the kid gave his permission to use his name on this site.
