Big Bend CC Men's & Women's Wrestling

I wanted to reach out to members of the wrestling community, as we recently have advertised men’s and women’s head wrestling coach positions at our institution.

Wrestling began at our college roughly three years ago, but since its inception has had very little charted course in leadership or direction. I became AD in July 2022 and am working to establish relevancy moving forward.

In addition to hiring new coaches, plans to join the NJCAA, to gain the program a more national profile, are in the works. We feel that our program has the potential to be one of the best at the two-year level.

Were you or someone you know have interest in carrying the baton for this journey ahead, I would appreciate you viewing/applying for/forwarding the position description links below. The college, as well as our department, has made a significant commitment to making the program known abroad and charting a course for success. Position salary is a starting point. Budgets are very competitive; there are solid facilities in place, with financial resources available for major improvements; and financial packages for prospective student-athletes are tremendous.

Is the ‘salary’ just the $8,500 stipend? Good programs at the collegiate level have coaches working all year. It’s a full time job. 8,500 is going to be a tough sell.

The application says there may be positions at the school for people as well. Guys that make more, for example at Clackamas also work for the college. It looks like they are open to this but need a qualified candidate.

Yes that is the current stipend. It is comparable to those at two year level for wrestling programs. Additionally, though, there are potential athletic administrative duties that can increase the pay, as well as a plethora of teaching opportunities on campus. Opportunity to grow a nationally competitive program is the most attractive for someone who wants to make their mark on a college program.

If serious about this, I'd suggest the following:
1. Make it NJCAA first, commit to it. Looking to go NJCAA sounds cool but you will get a better and deeper appliacant pool, if in NJCAA. I dont want to say " Nobody", but virtually hardly almost nobody is interested in coaching club wrestling.

2. Consider paying more than $8500. You aren't going to be a nationally competitive program for $800 a month. HS coaches make very similar and most end there heavy responsibilities for the year in March.

The AD has come on here and stated that they want to build a wrestling program but they need a "wrestling person" to lead it. They are looking for someone interested in leading that advancement and also looking for wrestlers to fill the roster. Wrestling is not in a position of strength that they can dictate to colleges to build the program for them. Wrestling needs to lead the charge if there is truly a interest in wrestling beyond high school. If the interest is there it sounds like this school is willing to work growing a competitive program. I don't think he was asking for input on how to do his job. I think he was asking the wrestling community whether there is the interest to grow a program. Not easy in this day and age.

This can't be serious. An institution of higher learning wants to pay a salary less than half the poverty level for a full time job. Got it.

Many of you people responding are what I like to call clueless. Community Colleges do not hire coaches for $60,000 to coach only. Not a thing. They are funded like public schools. They have a certain amount of money for athletics. This is exactly in the neighborhood for what these guys make to coach at this level around the country. Now, if you are a little smarter than the average wrestling parent, you can see that they are also offering a potential job in the athletic department or something like that. This is where someone could make a salary and still coach, just like a high school coach does... This isn't a D1 school, but its real college wrestling, so instead of picking at it find a way to support it. Last I saw, we have zero other AD's of a college asking for support and help

I would advertise the job opening after they become NJCAA. Club Wrestling has too much of a stigma that it isn’t real.

I don’t think recommending that a good candidate might need more than $200 per week is bad thing. Long term wise if you invest in something, you will have a better chance for success and sustainability. If they simply want to have a team so they can get 20 kids and their tuition money, no problem. If you want longterm growth , success and bigger numbers, I’d say pay a bit more and get in the NJCAA first. May be two different coaches. The guy you hire to be the club coach and the coach once it becomes varsity May be different people.

Are they going to hire someone before the recruiting season is done? Who do they have as applicants for this?

They’re going to have to find a way to get them teaching there too or it’s same stuff different day! Nobody can survive on the $17,000 they’re offering for both positions combined but that $145,000 they’re paying profs certainly makes that possible!
