Eastern Washington top producer of wrestlers?

Why does Eastern Washington consistently produce higher level wrestlers than Western Washington?

I know the westside has great wrestlers, but the east is tougher top to bottom.

Last week, the west side had a Pac 12 Champ and a Juco National Champ. Where were the Eastsiders? Were you just talking about high school or kids that go on to college?

I think he was talking about HS overall. For instance, the three best boys are without a doubt from the east side of the mountains. The best girl and best girls are definitely from the east side of the mountains.

You are smoking that Yaki Cracki. The two best male wrestlers are from Bremerton. By far! And the best female is from the West.

The Bremerton boys are so much better than everyone they don’t want to count them. Lol nobody is more dominant than those two, guess where Bremerton is located. Hahaha the WESTSIDE!

Per WIAA website, the top scoring teams regardless of category are as follows.

7-10 top scoring teams are east of the mountains.
12-15 top scoring teams are from east of the mountains.

This does not include individuals but is conclusive that the eastside outperforms the west side.

How many D1 wrestlers this year are from the east or west side ? If I had to bet 12-15 westside 1-3 eastside starters 6-7 westside 2 eastside. I get it I see the dome but most to D1 has the top end in the state. and to the NCAAs 2 westside 1 eastside.

Good point,

But to be fair, I would argue that the top tier male and female wrestlers come from the eastside of the mountains. Regardless of grade, that is.

No the top tier is D1
Tate O, Franky A, Chase T, Haden D EASTSIDE 4
just the pac 12 has 5 from the west side at least 10 more all from the west side top tier 3 to 1 westside. But the T dome eastside. But no way the top tier is not D1. And with Gurr, Rogers, and Drew it is still 7 to 15 even if I missed some and it is only 8-12 still 3 out of 5 from the westside.

College athletics factor in heavily academics. those guys at the college level are also champions in the classroom. Westside dominates with that factor. If it is straight up wrestling, eastside prevails.

38 champs from east side

Farm boys and girls vs. city kids. That’s it in a nutshell. Kids on the east side work with their hands. On the west side they work with their fingers. That’s the difference.

The second biggest reason why Metro wrestling lags behind other conferences is participation in the sport. While the population overall is way higher per capita on the west side, there are comparatively a lot fewer wrestlers, specifically in King county. I could be wrong, but I bet in overall number of HS wrestlers, it's actually pretty comparable between the west and east sides.

4A deep dive

Looking at the numbers. WA state population is roughly 78% westside, and 22% eastside. I looked at 4A because it is the biggest sample population-wise, and it also closely correlated with the “east/west split”. Also, since Metro is 3A, it removes the “downtown Seattle” bias, as that area/league lags far behind the rest of the state.

4A has 51 schools- East 15, (29%), West 36 (71%). So 4A has a little more weight using that than just base population.

Champs- West 9 (64%), East 5 (36%)
Placers- West 75 (67%), East 37 (33%)
Top 10 teams- West 7, East 3
Total team points scored West 1209 (68%) East 569 (32%).

Looking at D1 wrestlers, college wrestlers, or state champs is pretty silly, because the sample size is so small.

When you look at the numbers, 2 things jump out to me:
1. Despite a much larger population to draw from, West doesnt have as many schools (and therefore teams) as one might expect. They may be heavy in 3a, but I suspect that the real answer is that W Wa has a lot of people that simply do not have young families at all…as the East is filling more schools with a lot smaller population base.

2. Once you look at in terms of “teams”, the differences in 4A are not as huge. Everything correlates within 3-4 percentage points, with that edge to the East. Meaning, people from Lake Stevens, Tahoma and Sumner are a lot more like people from Spokane Valley, Tri Cities and the Yakima Valley than they are like people from Ballard, West Seattle, or O’Dea.

Of course, this is just one year. This year alone, East losing Hoffman and Maltos at 120, kids transferring out of G-Prep, or other injuries to key wrestlers could have been enough to shift the stats a couple more percentage points. Would love to see someone dive in a go back a few more years on this.

Is it or it is something From 11:00 am till now I still just do not get it all the kids(east/west) are just as smart all the kids have the same things in life all the kids get same meets same duels. It has to be what? Well 11 D1 wrestlers right now in college from Washington all wrestled each other as kids a lot. Iron sharpens Iron is it that simple?

we don’t have the resources in the valley,we don’t have the same upbringing,we are plagued by poverty,drugs,gang violence and just over all lack of opportunities. Our parents usually are immigrants and are hardly educated … If we go to college after high school, we are likely first or maaaybe 2nd generation college students and rarely pan out on the next level…mainly due to not being prepared and groomed for that lifestyle/grind.Our environmental and genetical factors differ so drastically ,it’s not even funny . Puget sound is like el dorado compared to where we come from, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t also happy .

The west will always win due to the location,opportunities and predecessors who paved the way,but don’t get it twisted you Mf’s know exactly who we are .You Mf’s know just how tough we can be . You Mf’s know that if we had the same opportunities as you “spoon fed trust fund kids” we would f’n dominate in every facet of life . You don’t know struggle ,you don’t know this kind of pain and you don’t have this type of work ethic,and it shows when little Johnny steps on the mat with one these underserved/underprivileged kids (who come from nothing and only know how to fight to survive. There’s a reason why the 1A,3A 4A titles belong to the Eastside and will remain on the Eastside for years to come.If you’re scared
go to Jesus pete,if not come on down to Toppenish or Granger and prove us wrong . We’ll be waiting with open arms .

The same schools that send plenty of kids to undergraduate, and eventually graduate, schools? Compared to the per capita west side results?

You ever hear of taking moms tit out your mouth and earning your keep through hard work and dedication (rather than having mommy and daddy and grandpa money paying for you to go get your ass kicked at a prestigious university)? If these kids get to college it purely off their hard work and perseverance.,please spare me with the per capita shit .

You know, you actually make some valid arguments at the beginning of your post, but once you dive into being a victim, you lost all credibility. What you say about some of the disadvantages of living in the Yakima Valley are absolutely true, but if you think that anyone should or would feel sorry for you and start calling people out, you just sound angry that others have more possessions that you do. Also, if you list genetic factors as a disadvantage, you are absolutely mistaken. Keep working hard and you will be more successful, but with your attitude, you probably won't.

I agree I sounded bitter and almost envious,but that’s not the case I just hate when people turn wrestling into something it’s not. No one was asking about who makes more money ,or about who goes on to be more successful in life after wrestling. The question was quite simple “is Eastern,wa the top producer of wrestling in wa”. They had to turn it into a money thing and then implying we aren’t literate or academically inclined. Yah of course I’m going to stand up for my people!

And I’m not playing the victim I made it out the valley and became successful and so can anyone else…but trust me it isn’t easy,coming from where we come from.

I am sure that the guy was trolling and just looking for a response because of all the chest thumping by the east side. Of course those could be just guys trolling the other way. Hell, it could be the same guy playing both side. You however gave an honest and heartfelt response. It was nice to see a real response of how things are and how easy some of us have it. My heart goes out to you and to others that are in the same situation.

A better question to ask: why does Eastern WA never send HS wrestlers off to college to wrestle when western WA does? Sure once every 10 years an eastern kid goes to juco or div 3, but rarely do they ever attempt to wrestle with the best after HS. Are they too lazy, too dumb for college??

3 of last 4 Div I AA’s are from Eastern Washington. 4 of last 5 if you count the Covid year when they voted wrestlers AA’s
