Every year at this time this comparison comes up. While women's wrestling is growing at an incredible rate, this "NCAA" women's championship is what throws it back into reality. It really hasn't developed into a competitive tournament yet. Count all the techs and pins at this national tournament. There are some good individuals and some that make mommas real proud, but not where it needs to be yet.

Women's College wrestling is freestyle. If you look at the men doing freestyle, you see similar results. Freestyle wrestling tends towards higher scores while collegiate folkstyle rewards the riding time.

There is always more techs in Freestyle. If you actually knew wrestling you would know that. Freestyle is a way different style that tends to have higher points scored in general. Stop trying to minimize this young woman's incredible accomplishments. Somebody sounds jealous that she has more accomplishments.

Let's see how JUCO guys do against D2? Sure thing, North Idaho College DESTROYED Simon Fraser in a dual this year. There's several examples of top JUCO schools kicking the shit out of four-year programs both in duals and tourneys. Clackamas CC and NIC are local programs that are top in the nation every year.

"Get the grades"??? Many high GPA wrestlers choose JUCO because they don't want to graduate college with 100k+ of debt jackass! NIC gives 20 full atheltics wrestling scholarships every year... most NIC wrestlers have high GPAs and simply want to allow their wresting to actually cover their entire tuition. They also make it their goal to send their wrestlers to 4 year programs after...which they do every year.

Your statement is the epitome of privilege. "Get the grades" so you can start your life with 100k of student loans. Great idea clown. Let me guess, mommy and daddy paid for your schooling while they fed you with a silver spoon.

Well it was the grades with some of those guys. A lot of Juco guys should have been legit D1 or D2 guys, but got their offers pulled for bad grades. And 100,000 in debt is a little extreme. Get the grades and the academic scholarship and athletic scholarship's combined roll in. Simon Frazier sucks complete ass right now.and had been beat by many. By the way, Guerin is legit. What she has accomplished is nothing to joke about.

100k is not that extreme these days... but let's lower it to 40-50k... is that the kind of debt any youngster should start their lives with?

And yes, there are some legit wrestlers that need JUCO because of grades... so what. It's still a great opportunity to wrestle at a high level JUCO team that will wrestle D1-NAIA tournaments all over the country.

This is the least of REAL AA's not your crappy Juco or NAIA. Did you see how many WA had? ZERO! All this HS stuff means nothing when we can't turn it up to the next level.

High school matters for those that is matters to. Same at middle school and kid's wrestling. I know one family with 7 state titles and none of the kids wrestled in college. They all turned out well and they all enjoyed the ride. It just ended by their choice after high school. College Div I sports are for about 1% of high school athletes, if that.

I'm an idiot a moron, I'm talking about wrestling in a wrestling thread, OMG! JUCO and NAIA ARE weak. I could almost guarantee that half the good HS teams in Pennsylvania, CA, IL, NJ, or Iowa would run through the JUCO or NAIA bracket with ease. Wyoming Seminary, Bergen Catholic, or the Blair Academy would score bonus points in every weight at the NAIA championships. Quit talking like this is something HUGE to be proud of. Sure I was happy when my son won schoolboy state too, but that didn't make him the best. Rather than be proud of the JV tournament how about WA push our best wrestlers to go to D1 instead of being one of the few states in the country without a D1 AA. The fact that you all call me names and defend this shows just how low you set the bar for our kids.

And I forgot to mention the WA girls. Did you notice how well Shelby Moore did at the state tournament this year? Oh wait, she skipped it, didn't even wrestler in it because she was out of the country wrestling where she could find some real competition. The WA girls weren't tough enough for her. I only wish there were some WA boys that had the same mindset and chose to push themselves to the next level.

Shelby Moore IS still in HS and is the #2 ranked girl in the entire country, yet she doesn't wrestle WA girls because they are no competition for her.

WIAA rules require she wrestles with a HS team. She left the state and is at the OTC in Colorado. Therefore, she was ineligible to wrestle in WA.

So Jay with all your wisdom and experience what can you do to help Washington produce wrestlers that can compete at the D 1 level?Are you willing to start an elite club? Are you willing to travel the state and put camps on? Mabey step up and coach a High School program... What can or our you willing to do it's an honest and legit question. What credentials do you bring to the table to help Washington wrestling? Maybe instead of belittling Washington wrestling be part of the salution. Again, I'm not a coach, or a teacher or in anyway involved in the school system - as the same as the majority of people that post on here. I'm also not a NFL coach but I can certainly comment on the Seahawks can't I? What WA needs to do is to step up in several areas. WIAA is weak when it comes to referees and mat management. Watch a WA match compared to an Iowa match, not even close, they actually let them wrestle there and don't call stalling and out of bounds every time a shoelace touches the line. 2) It absolutely hurts WA more than anything that we have let Title IX bring down our college level wrestling and drop programs and lose good WA wrestlers. 3) Coaches need to be persistent in getting scholarships for our best wrestlers to go to the next level. Every year there are dozens of state champs that never wrestle again because they don't know how to recruit or to take advantage of the college systems recruiting process, 4) Parents - Especially Eastside parents! You have great talented kids that do not give education the priority it needs! Push your kids to be educated - push your kids to go to college - have bigger aspirations for them than working in the fields and the mills for the rest of their lives. If we at least do some of these steps we might see a WA wrestler AA at the D1 level again!
