Who’s #1 Invite January 20 2024

Unless you’re wrestling freestyle/greco, this still counts as a team outing for any/all teams who have a wrestler that competes at this event. You’re also competing with Rumble in the Valley, which seems to be turning into one of the better tournaments in WA.

Best of luck, we all like to see or even hear about these top level matchups.

If this event were to be sanctioned through WSWA, and the wrestlers go as individuals with USAW cards then it is NOT a WIAA event and does not count as an outing or match count. This was done a few years ago when the WSWA sponsored the Who's #1 dual of the two highest ranked wrestlers they could get. It ran for two years and was an awesome event.

When my son was a freshman (20 years ago) I took him to a couple of USAW tournaments in Oregon to get some good competition since his team didn't go to any tough tournaments his first 2 years of HS. I know it was okay because I read it in their manual and I also called the WIAA wrestling director to make sure it wouldn't come back to bite him in the butt. It didn't.

Just sharing some info that has been debated on the board for 25 years but was actually settled years before that. Hope that might help. There are lots of fully legal tricks in my bag. You just have to think outside the box.

Yes I was on ground zero of the original it was a fun event
We want these kids to represent their schools.
Outings:
If a school lets say Orting is wrestling at a tournament on the 20th, but they have a kid competing in the event. This still only costs team 1 outing. With the change of the rule for 2 day events to only count as 1 outing I can’t foresee outings even being an issue.
But this idea is still in phase one and we’re open to any ideas to make this event awesome!
We need to do more cool stuff to help grow our sport. We are not opposed at going through USA but I needed to put it on paper to make sure it would happen

Thanks for the update and that makes sense that you want them representing their school. It's nice that the change in outings and match count rules make that possible now compared to a few years ago. I think they were only allowed 29 matches during the regular season 20 years ago.

Touch base with me in the fall when you get everything dialed in and we can check the schedule and see if it works for me to ref. I reffed the Who's #1 in 2017 and 2018 so it would be fun to do it again.

Just curious..
The 2018 WSWA Who's #1 was on a Thursday to intentionally avoid conflicts with WIAA tournaments that took place on that weekend.

Would the WIAA allow WSWA HS tournaments to compete against their sanctioned scheduled events?

This event would be more spectacular if moved after the Mat Classic to crown all-class champions.

The outing thing is very easy to get around. All you have to do is say this is your varsity outing, and wherever the rest of your team goes that day is considered your JV outing.

We will see who is afraid of competition and who seeks it out. This gives every top wrestler in the state regsrdless of classification an opportunity to see who is truly #1...

Sorry, this seems dumb. Unless they are listening teams (I know it’s early) that are committed this post is only to try and boast about how good the Orting people think their school is. They tried this same tactic earlier the past season. I remember a post about how thy were the best team in the state.

Same thing here. Good luck trying to convince yourself that you’re the best. I still remember how y’all fared against good competition.

Was there ever a tournament that had all state placers from each division in one bracket? That would truly be who’s number 1 in each weight class. Would take a 64 man bracket.

And just because a kid gets invited Doesnt mean they will show. If team is going somewhere else that’s where kids will go. 🤷‍♀️

I believe most coaches who had a top 5 wrestler would encourage said wrestler to compete in this tourney even if the team already had something scheduled. Odds are that particular wrestler would be significantly more challenged instead of a 1st round by and 2 quick pins and a tech in the team tournament he would be attending. Thanks for putting this on Jody.
