Girls sports under attack in Washington State

Statewide our girls are under attack. The WIAA continues to allow biological males who identify as female, compete as such. Girls basketball had multiple biological males taking opportunities from our female athletes. This is also occurring In track, wrestling, and cross country. Write your local lawmakers. Resist. Fight for true equity.

The WIAA does not have to disclose due to age and privacy laws. Attorneys are discussing if it is within rights of the girls that are competing withing their respective divisions. This is common on my side(west) of the state and it continues to grow.

Bigotry at its finest.

WIAA has had an affirming, trans-inclusive policy since 2007.

I'm aware that this is one of the popular Right wing targets of hate at the moment, please cite the massive and growing issue with boys calling themselves girls for the sake of winning a girls title, then deciding they are boys after all....I'll wait.

Trans-girls are girls, let them participate in sports.

I threw javelin at Adams College in the late 80s. Although I only competed against fraternities and club level, I could have been much more successful had the university assumed my transgender and allowed time to compete as identified. I’m happy Washington is getting this right.

First, I do not have a dog in the fight. However, a few questions.

1. Would you recognize that a trans female is biologically stronger that a biological female?

2. If so, should the state require parents of biological females be told they are competing against a biological male?

Just curious as a matter of policy. I’m open to either side.

The average post-pubescent boy is stronger/faster than the average post-pubescent girl. Not so much prepubescent. I think this is pretty obvious in wrestling based on the fact that most/all of the girls who have won/placed well at a state high school tournaments have been in the lowest weight classes that tend to be filled with boys who are barely hitting puberty. Also, there are more and more girls winning in lower grade competition against the boys (10-12 y/o and younger)

I don't know what impact puberty blockers have on the strength/speed of the average transgirl vs the average cisgirl. (I am also aware that hormone blockers are not required for an athlete to compete at the hs level as a member of the gender with which they identify).

I think parents should be made aware of the WIAA's (or whatever organization) policy on gender inclusivity/ exclusivity. In the case of WIAA, parents should simply assume every opponent their athlete competes with could be cis or trans.

Anecdotes/ random thoughts
(1) one of my girls is much stronger than many other girls. Assuming I'm referring to a cis girl- do parents need to be told she has a significant strength advantage?
(2) there are nonbinary/ more masculine appearing (assigned female at birth) wrestlers on the girls' teams- I wonder how many of the "biological males" that are "ruining" things just don't look girly enough.
(3)Like many relatively experienced wrestlers, my girls have competed with and trained with boys. So far all the injuries have been the result of training with inexperienced girls.
(4)a few years ago our hs coach made the girls aware that there was (may have been?) a transgirl competing at a meet and if they were uncomfortable wrestling said athlete that the coach was ok if they chose to forfeit.
(5) where is the big fuss about the transboys. I know we have had at least one transboy on a sports team at our school.

It's not even close! My son was a decent HS wrestler in WA for several years. He never won a state championship but placed in all 4 years he wrestled. His junior year of HS a female Olympic silver medalist came and worked out with the team over Christmas break. He and she were roughly the same size so he practiced with her. He tore her up. Time after time after time. She was one of the best in the world, yet couldn't hang with a mid-range HS boy. Allowing biological boys that call themselves girls is not only unfair, it's unsafe. Once puberty starts they are separated for a reason. It's not bigotry, it's science.

I heard there were two males that competed in the girls small division 2A and below at this years state tournament. Coaches and female wrestlers should be made aware if this is the case. They are ruining girls sports and this will have parents questioning if they let their daughters wrestle. Of of our female wrestlers said she was told at the tournament there were 2 guys

Intriguing that you "heard" this but apparently know nothing about it...did trans girls win their brackets or are you hearing third hand gossip about a masculine looking wrestler.

Odd how a policy that is at least 16 years old is ruining girls sports.

I agree, the policy needs to change but it needs to be done correctly.
Please “Write your local lawmakers” and also the Wiaa if you disagree with the policy. USA wrestling does it different and has a better policy on this subject.
BUT.. please don’t show up to matches as an adult and boo and hate when all the rules are being followed per wiaa. Remember that person wrestling is still a kid.

Bottom line. If you have one, you’re a boy if you don’t you’re a girl. Boys compete as boys and use the proper bathroom. Otherwise there is no distinction between boy wrestling and girl wrestling. Not quite fair for the girls.

There is a girl transitioning to a man at my gym... but shes still competing in all woman's powerlifting divisions... not sure how that's going to work down the road....

Or is it liberalism the culprit. The schools are brainwashing kids at a very young age into believing they have the power to choose what sex they want to be. Very confusing to young minds. Actually nobody has that power. You are either born male or female. When the doctor says it’s a boy or it’s a girl that’s exactly what it is. There is nothing in this world that can change that. Boys should stay out of girls sports period, no exceptions.

Good point but not entirely true. Middle Schools asking children what gender they are definitely contributes to the issue at hand. Especially when the student has been identified by his/her parent when registered within the district.
