Legal Action concerning WIAA/Hermiston future.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion for some and popular for others. I am beginning a legal process to assess the Hermiston/WIAA relationship. I will pursue the removal of Hermiston from all WIAA sanctioned state tournaments. This is not about wrestling, but all sporting events sanctioned by the WIAA.

Sore loser more likely. The tri-cities schools are better and more competitive because of the quality of the opponents.

The simple fact WIAA represents the athletes of Washington State. Oregon is the governing body of its own schools and athletics. With this said, I agree with your mission and wish you success.

Your kid lost to a Hermiston kid at state, so you are going to selfishly push your agenda which could negatively impact all the WA families who appreciate their kid having the opportunity to get better competition? Got it. At least be transparent enough to say what it is. You cannot speak for all WA kids because all the families I know support them competing in our state. You will hurt WA wrestling with your agenda. Here's an idea: take all that time, money, and energy...and spend it on getting your kid better at wrestling.

I too will start some frivolous lawsuits....I have decided to sue every state wrestling association and other sport association that allowed out-of-staters to participate in their state tourneys in 2020/2021 and I'm suing the NCAA for allowing Simon Fraser to compete with "American" teams/sarcasm.

1. Montana has participants in Idaho and I'm certain there are others.
2. You've essential said I'm looking out for Washington kids and have not made a case other than that. You say "real issues at hand", but haven't say squat about what they really are other than some kids didn't get to go to state from Washington schools.
3. Way to go, use WIAA financial resources on legal action when we're discussing on other threads the costs of an attempts to continue the Mat Classic.

St Regis, Montana glues with Mullan in football and competes all year long and even in the state playoffs. St Regis enrollment is even factored in for classification purposes. They repeatedly win their conference. Not sure about any of their other sports.

Wow let the kids just wrestle. If your child loses than maybe they should put more time on the mat. Hermiston is part of WIAA because the unfortunate location of the city. The best wrestler will win no matter what state they wrestle out of. Hermiston needs to participate in sports as well. Don't take it away from the kids.

Have fun with that. You’ll find you have no grounds to stand on. Despite the whining about tax dollars, WIAA is not actually a government agency. It is a private, non-profit organization, to which schools may choose (or choose not to) be a member.

They receive ZERO direct tax dollars, and other than membership dues from schools, receives no “public funds” at all.

I don't think the WIAA is worried about this issue , if they are letting biological males compete against females. Hermiston appears to be safe.

Real wrestling parents want as much competition for their kids as possible. The litigious folk running their mouth on here remind me of all the wealthy parents in the "other" team sports who pay for their kid to be on the select team despite not having the skills to start on a rec team! The select coach takes the parents money and sits johnny on the bench all year long... but little Johnny gets to wear the team gear at school and fit in with the actual athletes. Another case of parents throwing money at their kids social lives.

The W in WIAA stands for Washington. It would appear that it is Hermiston is scared to wrestle Oregon kids and begged Washington to save them. It cannot be about travel because lots of Washington schools travel far distances to compete.

Wrestling isn't the only sport. Some sports primarily participate in league play.

As a parent, I would NOT be happy if every away competition/league event required a 6+ hour round trip.

If I were a school administrator, I would not be happy for my students to miss that much school time just to travel.

I also would not be thrilled with the fuel costs/ vehicle wear and tear to routinely travel that far.

I am aware this is a wrestling board...but the kids are STUDENTS first.

Well, in reality, they can wrestle against Washington state schools for the tournaments in Duals.
It would only mean traveling for two tournaments league and state. And as you know teams from Eastern Washington, travel to the west side for each.

Prior to joining the WIAA, of which there was lots of discussion here, it was made known that the State of Oregon had placed them in a league where they were having to travel just outside Portland for league duals. Stupid, but Hermiston had appealed and like much of what happens in Washington Portland/Seattle decides and the outter areas don't have the clout or #s to change that direction.

It's kind of an oddity for such a large school (1500+ kids) to exist by itself in an area where all the biggest surrounding high schools have between 350 and 550. That's like pitting 4A vs 1A. In an individual sport, like wrestling, classifications don't really matter for individual ability to compete, but in sports like football, a matchup of Chiawana and Connell is going to be a regular bloodbath.

Hermiston does get the best of both worlds. Gets to fully compete in Oregons middle school state championship qualifiers and state tournament, and coaches get to all be there as well.

Nice catch, and some follow-up research shows that all of those WA schools are, indeed, in the OSAA now.

Of course, they're not noticed as much because they're all Oregon 1A (or basically 1B by WA standards, Trout Lake's school size is 12 kids!) and none of them have football or wrestling while Hermiston is a Washington 4A high school with 1500+ kids.

Looking at the map, though, the nearest OSAA 6A league is 3 hours away. Heck, the nearest 5A league is even farther. Meanwhile, the Tri-Cities are 45 minutes away and Spokane is 2 hours, 45 minutes.

I will admit that when I first heard of this years ago, it ruffled my feathers, but after taking a closer look it makes the most sense.

Folks, you are looking at this all wrong. Nobody is denying the inconvenience factor for Hermiston and the great students and athletes. This is about Washington State, our schools, our athletes. The State Tournament, regardless of the sport, is a precious thing. It should showcase the best of Washington it is that simple. Oregon should showcase the best of Oregon.

And Oregon State University wrestling should kick Brandon Kaylor back to wrestle in a Washington institution. After all, Oregon Statue University Wrestling should be solely for Oregon kids. Oops. Ain't really got one. ugh

While we're at it, disallow transfers in from other states to not be eligible for Washington medals unless they can demonstrate they were born here. Those are Washington medals and we don't want some kid from Arkansas taking one of our medals.

This is what participation awards have done for our sport. We don't want to wrestle the best, we want to assure that "our own" gets the biggest and brightest medal they can even if it means watering the sport down to achieve that.

Sad. The state of Washington wrestling is in trouble folks.

To "Makes no Sense"..... If I'm looking at it "all wrong", then I don't want to be right.
