Hermiston

I am well aware that all you grown-up crybaby just want to throw a fit...but why is Hermiston part of WIAA? See story below- newsflash- its for the kids' sake.

Sounds like an Oregon issue not Wa problem. How far did they have to travel for Regionals and State ? Maybe help them with their league problems but to let them wrestle at a Wa State Tournament they had to travel hours to get their have them go to the Oregon State tournament but why not let them all in lets help the schools close to Canadian border also

It is 4 hours from Hermiston to the Tacoma dome. It is 3 1/2 hours from Hermiston to the Memorial Center (OSAA state venue). I like it. Both my sons had great match ups with Hermiston kids during their 4 years. Makes WA wrestling better.

This is not about "Oregon" Kids. This is about our kids. The WIAA should be ashamed for allowing Oregonians to take opportunities from our state. We pay our taxes and fund our schools and communities. Hermiston take a drive down I5.

I agree Jake. It is not hard to figure out. The W in WIAA stands for Washington. The "its for the kids" argument falls flat as it only takes away from Washington kids. My kid had to travel over 250 miles for both regionals and state the last couple weeks so travel is not an excuse to allow this. Hermiston also has the advantage of getting to coach folkstyle out of season per Oregon rules BUT Washington coaches cannot. It will take the coaches and ADs to stand up to this nonsense.

Are you afraid of your kid losing? Don't teach your kid to be a coward. Teach him to work hard and invite competition. We're fortunate to get to bring a storied program into our state. My sons had great matches with Hermiston kids over their high school careers, winning most, but losing some too. They became better wrestlers because of it.

After reflecting on it last night, "coward" might be too harsh of a word. However, I really believe this attitude is a major contributor to why we have so few WA kids finishing college. I have seen so many dads encouraging their sons to duck competition to pad their high school stats. When I was in college, I couldn't believe how many incoming freshmen with huge high school accomplishments would quit by Christmas break because they couldn't handle getting beat in the room or at the opens. When I moved here after college, our goal for our sons throughout their wrestling careers was to try to seek out the best competition, which did result in losses at times. I really believe that has helped them in college to weather the storm and focus on getting better when they take losses or have slumps in the room. Just my two cents as a crazy dad.

Again, this has nothing to do with seeking out competition. This has nothing to do with college kids. This has nothing to do with you or your sons. This has everything to do with Washington athletes having the opportunity to participate in the Washington tournament. Why have a WIAA? Why have OHSAA and 5 Oregon divisions?

You sound dumb. How is this teaching a kid to be a coward? This is about opportunity for Washingtonians and those paying taxes to fund Washington Schools and athletics.

Spot on. The kids are not trying to duck anyone. This is so ignorantly naïve. It is very simple and most should be able to understand it. W in wiaa stands for Washington. See not complicated. Let Oregon figure out how to best take care of their students. Once again if it is about Oregon kids having to travel look how little the WIAA cares for their own residents. Simply look up the definition of the word region and then look how those wizards of smart divided our state up by regions.

Why is Umatilla able to wrestle in the Oregon HS State Championships, but Hermiston cannot? They are right next to each other.

Hermiston is the largest school in Eastern Oregon. Umatilla is surrounded by other schools within their league that is in within easy driving distance.
There are two schools of thought, one I do believe Oregon needs to re-align their classifications and reduce the numbers that they actually have. If you think Washington is watered down with the classifications, look at Oregon. They have about half of the population that Washington has, but have an extra class (going from 1A-6A). So yes, this is an Oregon problem that needs to be re- aligned and re-figured.
On the other hand, being the largest high school in Eastern Oregon Hermiston was traveling up to 4 and 6 hours one way. Trips to bend, the dalles, hood river, portland, as far south as medford. With all of the their sports and activities combined, they could have went around the world 3 times with the combined mileage. On top of that students were missing a large chunk of school. Particularly any three sport athlete's, who were missing over a month of school due to travel.
My stance is this, other states do it so its nothing unheard of and not as unusual as everyone thinks. It seems to be the ones who are getting beaten by a Hermiston kid are the ones who are complaining. So yes, it is about the kids. And by having Hermiston compete in Washington, and particularly in wrestling it does nothing but raise the level of competition. What you should be worrying about instead is making wrestling better in Washington. While Oregon is adding college wrestling programs left and right...Washington cant even support the one's they have. While our athletes are choosing not to even wrestle in college because of the out of state price tag attached to it. Or if they do, they never come back and coach because they stay in a place like Iowa or Ohio and are actually valued.
