Cons. Champ Explanation Please

Can someone explain what is the Consolation Champ. Also, why would a kid that only has one loss in the tournament end up the Cons Champ place but not have an actual place like 4th, 5th or 6th.
At the Mat Animal Invitational in Quincy today every bracket had one.

It’s a dumb bracket many tournaments use.

It might appear strange to top level wrestlers or people who are only looking at the medal rounds. There are a number of reasons why it is beneficial to parents/coaches worried about a whole team or program.

It allows tournaments to get done faster by
eliminating a round. The match count doesnt change but a round and the associated wait time is eliminated. Honestly when coaches enter seeding criteria how often do first round losers end up in the 3/4 match?

It also lets kids that arent as strong get a few extra matches at their level. It is hard to take weaker "varsity" kids to a JV tournament. The backside/consolation is a happy medium for our medium wrestlers.

It is probabaly good for mid level tournaments and events that have to end in one day.

Typically, if you run any bracket larger than 16 you have to go with a modified or consolation type of bracket. Otherwise, you will have wrestlers that hit there 6 match limit in a day and then they are forced to forfeit matches. 2-day tournaments don't run into this problem as they can spread the match count over multiple days.
This also allows wrestlers that would normally get knocked out of a tournament after 2 rounds to actually get to compete with other wrestlers that would as well, since they most likely would be in the consolation bracket as well.
