Best wrestlers to come out of WA into college the last 10 years

Are Drury and Rogers the best to come out of WA the last 10 years? I know Brandon Kaylor has also had his success so those three and who else? Hunter Cruz and Franky Almaguer are yet to make any noise that I know of at least.

Hartman wrestled for Duke and placed 3rd at NCAA. I think that’s the highest placer in the last 10 years.

Coach Hartmann was a 3 time AA. One year he reached the semifinals along with Kyle Snyder, Jaden Cox, and Kyven Gadsen. Pretty impressive company.

Meeks 4TH place finish was awesome. Chandler Rogers run during college was fun to watch.
Hands down it would have to be Hartmann. Not only was he a 3 time AA. He was also a 2 time academic AA at Duke if I remember correctly.
Doing the grind in college basically injury free is a blessing.
Getting excellent grades and achieving wrestling accolades together is a testimate to work ethic.
I have no doubts that not only will he develop good wrestlers. He will follow there progress in regards to getting a high school degree.
Being a good athlete opens many doors. good grades opens all of them.

Hartmann 3x AA - 5th, 6th, 7th
Highest place in last 10 years at D1 is Taylor Meeks 4th in 2013

Orndorff was an AA twice. 8th and he was voted in during covid year.

Drury and Rogers definitely have the most potential. Drury being at 133 is a tough weight class but he made it last year. And next year when he returns he’ll be a sophomore still. So I definitely see him being an AA a couple times. As for Rogers he will be a redshirt freshman next year, and I believe he will be an AA his first season the kid is that good Michigan is one of the better schools a Washington wrestler has been able to attend.

I agree that Rogers is destined for All American status, but he really isn’t a Washington Wrestler, except for a few All Star Duals.
He never wrestled one minute here in High School. Drury does belong on the list.

Rogers is from WA and wrestled freestyle/greco with WA. He took third at fargo for WA it wasn’t until a year later he switched states for his senior year.

Family definitely from Washington but Rylan went to Blair for 2 years and Coeur d'Alene for 2 years. So may have wrestled for our state teams but never wrestled here in high school.

I have a long running heated debate going about whether or not Rylan counts for WA. If we claim him, I think we should also claim Drew Roberts.

They both should of wrestled for Toppenish but instead chose Coeur D’Alene which sounds like they are the Toppenish of Idaho

Kids move to various schools and it changes over time. Just like the "hot nightclub" of 2010 is now just a dive bar. At one time the school was Sedro Woolley and at the same time we had Lake Stevens in 4A. Looks like the tide has turned and the new magnet is Toppenish. Ten years from now it will be somewhere else. Constant change is the one true constant.

Wrestled at Gutcheck his sophomore year so "never wrestled in Washington" is not accurate.

Rylan was never a WA kid except a couple of duals matches with Freestyle or Greco. Showed up at Gut Check (dominated) but was wrestling for Blair (NJ).

Guys this is embarrassing what if he sees this, he will know we are all pathetic.

Hilarious that the thread immediately turned into an argument over whether we get to claim a person. The fact that we have to claim them at all tells the tale. No. They're not a Washington kid.

A Washington kid means they participated at the interscholastic level here. If a guy wrestled his whole life here and then left for high school, whelp, bummer, find another name for the list.

The whole reason we are talking college wrestling greats owes itself entirely to prep, aka high school wrestling careers. What one does at the preparatory level dictates whether they will go to college to wrestle in the first place (not always but c'mon), so if a guy does not compete at the high school level here, they do not count, as they did not land their spot at their respective collegiate institution based on what they did here.

Convoluted way of saying whomever this kid is, he does not count as he did not receive his scholarship based on what he did here in Washington, thus how could he be a "Washington great." Unless he got recruited for the little league titles he won against Billy when he was 6 yes old.

There are not many wrestlers at the college level that didn't start wrestling long before high school. I would bet that every name mentioned started as a youngster. If a coach or program wants to stake claim as being part of their success I think most of us are ok with that. Most of these kids were dang good youth wrestlers that did battle with each other at the Washington State Championships, many of them in all 3 styles. They also competed on Washington's National Dual teams that had huge success. I guess if you can show us some documentation that would suffice. If I'm being honest, it's laughable that someone mentions a couple names and the message board trolls jump on it like unemployed Twitter employee with too much time on their hands!

Firstly, I just wanted to add that the divisions, whether I, II, or III, at the NCAA level, are all unbelievably tough, so while 8th place may induce a shrug or not exactly raise a lot of eyebrows to the casual observer, it ain't Washington high school mat classic 8th place. Anyone who takes 8th at any NJCAA, NAIA, and especially NCAAs had to win several matches (as opposed to just two at the WIAAs) against a bevy of excellent wrestlers, typically kids who were the best of the best of the best wherever it is that they came from.

This may seem like a "duh" comment, but hey, we all get a little desensitized I think after so many years of this Fargo, that Fargo, this tournament, that tournament, this division, that division, etcetera.

Cruz went to Fresno and actually had a good run. I believe he made it into the rankings in the top 20?? Then Covid hit and California was not kind about it. Then Fresno dropped their program. He went to Utah with Drury and knocked out 3 Utah guys at 185 and during a practice, two heavy weights got into it pretty good and toppled over him and turned his knee to where his knee cap was sideways. Then he just decided he was done. Now he’s working and doing very well. He did get his degree before leaving Fresno but was unable to walk for graduation due to Covid.
