Gut Check Summer 3-style Tournament

So happy to announce that we are set for this event and I will be emailing all WA club and high school coaches this weekend the invitation. This event is sponsored by USA Wrestling, Cliff Keen and National Guard. We will have bantam up through Seniors, men's and women's, all 3 styles. We are expecting teams from 13 states so far and between 1500-2000 participants. We wanted to be on the summer series events list and now we are. I hope WA brings their best game and shows up the competition!

**DaveG, not sure if this counts as an advertisement like the camps but if it does I will gladly pay for it just let me know via email. Thanks.

This event is 3 weeks before Fargo, and many of the participants will be going to Fargo and other summer events as well. This is a great tourney to see where you are at and segway into the summer series and it's in our back yard. Schedule is almost done and will be posted.

I have actually been told by many coaches and parents that same sentiment, and they are happy to have something to get them ready for the summer and even have some early rivalries!

With wrestling college nationals coming up and recent posts about Washington college wrestlers, glad to see Seniors part of Gut Check. Hopefully the word gets out to these college wrestlers home for the summer and other graduated wrestlers. Would be great to see enough of a turnout in Seniors to make it a competitive showcase of the talent Washington has produced and also for all of us to see how much these guys have improved with all their hard work in college. Would make for some interesting matches of top placers from various years and A classes.

I haven't seen the flyer/official entry, but first post says through seniors, which is:
Senior Men Freestyle
(Male) Born 2004 or Before
from USA wrestling. So should be anyone that will be 18 or older this year regardless of in school or not.

Gut Check Summer 3-Style Tournament June27-29. Boys and Girls, U8 to Senior, Folkstyle, freestyle and Greco.

Schedule *subject to change on participant count*

Monday 6/27 - Folkstyle 8am start

Tuesday 6/28 - Freestyle 8am start

Wednesday 6/29 - Greco 8am start

Awards in all classes will be given at the end of each day.

Cost per wrestler: 1 style - $35, 2 styles - $30 each, 3 styles - $25 each

I assume when USAW finalizes the sanctioning it will get passed down to Justin to post on WSWA. I got an email request for some additional information needed 2 days ago I sent back to them. The date and venue are set and looking forward to a great event!

This event is on, June 27-29th at Showare. Before sending out the official flyer to coaches we had to tie some things up like officials, sanctioning, etc since there are other events out of state at the same time. I have spoken to many club coaches and they will pass this along to the parents. Sometimes the back end work takes longer. Thanks for your patience. I’ve ran plenty of events over the past 15 years, it takes 5 minutes to sanction an event. Unless you can’t pass a background check... My guess this event will fail again, lots of talk but no follow through… blame will be on someone else of course not the event planning… as one of the larger USAW club, we have had no one reach out to us other than the chatter here.

Sanction and provide a flyer so we can promote to our athletes and parents or get off the subject of trying to turn this HS event into a youth event

Posting anonymously is chicken shit, especially when you claim to have hosted plenty of events. My email and phone number is had by just about every coach and many parents in WA, along with the Gut Check website if you needed information.

I was considering sanctioning through Nuway, USAW or another entity. Whomever had good sponsorship and staff from that organization available was a big consideration. Many assets from WA are out of state that same week.

The Gut Check has never failed, and in 2020 was a top 10 tournament in the country so not sure where you get your facts from. It also gets WA wrestlers on the map and in front of college coaches for recruiting, which is what this summer event will do as well. If your involved with one of the larger clubs and don;t have information it's either because i did not send you anything or no one shared it with you from your club.

Trying to do this as a youth event will fail, won’t get the backing just like it did last year. As a HS event it is a good event, not sure I’d classify it as a Top 10 but good yes.

All I was saying is it takes 5 minutes to sanction with USAW as you declared this event was… Now you haven’t done it because as you mention you are seeking financial support from any organization willing to assist. Rules of this board l, free advertising if it’s USAW not sure it is if it’s another organization? Doubtful any organization will sponsor this event due to timing, just saying it will fail again as a Youth summer event. (Never said as a HS event)

Many assets from WA are out of state not sure how to address that one, Western State ends the 25th but your goal is to do this event Monday June 27-29… even if people were home odds are they work, another reason it will fail with lack of participation. Just saying location and timing are key to a successful event, this summer event isn’t good timing in my opinion. Thank you for going forward and trying but really you should try to keep it as one of the best HS Events in WA and maybe the Sunday after do a youth event… build on the name awareness in January

For those who actually deserve a more detailed response by me - officials for all 3 styles are harder to get with summer events taking place and the folks who can run FLO/Track with equipment are currently scheduled out of state. That said, sanctioning is not even a factor anymore as we cover our own insurance. This event currently has teams from Texas, Florida, Nevada, California, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Washington attending so far and there will be more. I am working as hard as I can to get this finalized and out to whomever states they don't have info. Thanks.

Where can we see who is registered, is this on Track or Flo? What is the fees for entry, is it by teams or individuals?

Can you share which team is coming from each state, get that out and let's see if we can add more teams?

Blair only came because of Bob, Blair had zero intention of ever coming back. Wyoming sem… again full of shit, this event has never been on their schedule, every year I look at the teams he claims are coming and this event is never on their schedule. Also, please tell me where you get the title of Top 10 tournament? Other than self appointed I will gladly name 10 tougher tournaments with Tri-State being one of them on 2019…. Let’s look at the result Blair winning most weight classes and those in the finals other than Blair kids not in the finals at Tri-state

I believe it was InterMat or Wrestling Insider that had GC at #10 in season tournament in 2020. While Tri-State was once the toughest tournament in the Northwest it has not been for some time, nor is Rollie Lane. Ironically, I have personally helped many tournaments in the area bring teams in for them, including Tri-state, to help build their events back up. 10 years ago the same anonymous posters said the idea of GC would never work. 10 years later they are still pissed and we couldn't be stronger. More corporate sponsorships, best possible venue, nationally ranked teams/wrestlers and college coaches coming every year to recruit. We deliver on being the best tournament in the Northwest. What have you done for Washington wrestling besides come on a message board anonymously? Seriously? You giving scholarships out to WA wrestlers? We are. You giving funds to Highline or to Officials Associations? We are. If Gut Check is so shitty why don't you put together an event and we'll all judge your efforts, but first you have to put your name on the post. Big tough guys all over the message board it's amazing. DaveG should have an annual biggest tough guy award for anonymous posters on the message board at this point. And Mike Sebaaly at NIC will gladly take a call and reiterate where Gut Check stands and what we do to help Tri State.

I went to your web site. Where is the link to register for the event? If it is 3 days long then we need to plan in advance to get time off work. What year was the first Gut Check tournament? Has it really been 10 years?

As promised, the flyer as well as our website has been completely updated. All Gut Check tournaments, clinics and camps can be registered and payment accepted online. With the addition of scholarships at every GC tourney for a male and female wrestler, we are building the application link currently. We are also working on giving 1 program each year a grant for new gear, mats, travel. There is a lot in the works and the tournament info got caught up in all of it. I will start posting teams/states after May 15th on the website.

No need for anonymous tattle tales as I emailed Dave myself last weekend and let him know whatever the cost to post this on a thread (I don't need any marketing or additional advertising) then to let me know.

And while you are busy bird dogging me which is creepy, Gut Check is now self sustainable, so I don't need to be sanctioned by any group if I choose not to. I run on a different entity than the Foundation, carry a large & specific insurance policy which is what sanctioning mostly is, and all Gut Check related events are registered and paid for through the Gut Check website. No need to register through FLO, Track, USAW or Nuway unless I deem it necessary.

Ironically you asked "At what point do we put an end to this?". Are you referring to your childish antics, the lack of support in WA wrestling, or me posting an event that I am not required to be sanctioned externally by anyone? If you put your name on here I'd gladly reach out directly. I'll be busy doing wrestling stuff and trying to improve our sport while you sit there and stake out the message board.

Marc I am pretty sure Dave G knows of the comedy show you put on here at the WWR. It’s like you are Barnum and Bailey and you are promoting bearded ladies and two headed monkeys.

You reference Inner Mat and Wrestling Insider as listing Gut Check as a top 10 yearly Tourney. Both of those publications are run by some geeks in their moms basement. Gut Check should be renamed, “Some of the best WA Wrestlers’”. It really is nothing more than some great wrestlers from Wa and Oregon.

It is no way or form a top tourney in the U.S. You can keep up the good work P.T.

If USAW or FLO posted that Gut Check was a top tournament you would still have an excuse or reason why it isn't (which FLO did in 2020 btw). I don't know those publications intensely, but I would imagine they aren't run by geeks in a basement, but who knows. I guess my question is why do you post anonymously. Is it because you think if I found out I would retaliate? Clearly if you believe what you say, you would put your name by it and face any consequence I felt would right the wrong.

There are a some folks, including DaveG that know a few who have said negative things about me personally or about Gut Check either on the board or to others that got back to me. One coach was fired after the AD and Superintendent heard he was slandering me, and it just so happens that school district gave me a philanthropy award prior to that incident. Then last year a sought after club coach was denied a coaching position at top high school program when the AD heard he was slandering me, and left the meeting in tears. Again, a district in which I had been recognized for philanthropic work and had a great relationship with the admin. Just recently some random official made a comment about me and was told not to return to that association if it happened again. Despite your efforts I worked hard to be plugged in to this community and as you see, other than anonymous posters, I am the standard.

So yes, I get you want to continue to bash me anonymously. Ironically I just keep doing more things every year for this sport I love, and you post on a message board. Gotta love the keyboard warriors that watch everyone else do the work. Do you think your posts do anything for the betterment of wrestling is what you should be asking. Do you understand for the past 10 years I've been hearing this same shit yet I'm the one you still talk about. Did you ever think you're what fuels the fire? As I continue to bring top wrestling to WA and work to bring back college wrestling you anonymous posters can piggy back on my efforts and enjoy sitting in the stands watching. Amen LOL.

There is a name for someone who only likes something when it gets BIG, but doesn't support it on the way up. It's called a frontrunner.

Nobody likes a frontrunner.

Gut Check is a well known popular tournament that any great wrestler in the PNW wants to be a part of. Those who know, know.

I wish there was a rule that anyone who criticizes or acts like a prick has to use their real name. It would solve a lot a questions.

I won't post names since they are irrelevant at this point but they know who they are. Anonymous bashing creates issues for DaveG when he has to manage the board. If you put your name on it, I can deal with it directly but clearly you don't want that. You talk a big game on the board anonymously. Can I get back to wrestling work now?

I'm positive you will vehemently deny it but I would venture to guess you have posted just as many times anonymously, on your own threads of course (bump), as you have used your own name.

The top tournaments in the country don't need any propaganda to promote, they promote themselves.
The individuals who work the hardest, don't have to tell you they work the hardest.
