Best Coaches in the last Decade.

Im tired of seeing all these other coaches get love, but the actual best ones get no Love. Why not put some respect on coach Pepe Segovias name. Along with Mando Valdez, and Tony Nunez. They have trained way better wrestlers than any other clubs Including Victory. They have trained guys like Haiden Drury probably one of Washingtons best wrestlers in the last 10 years. Kyler romero, Andy Aguilera, Horacio Godinez, Jermiah Zuniga, Kiyano Zuniga, Marcos Torrez, Miguel Torrez, Adan estrada, Rocco Clark, Joel Godina, Joel Coronel, Hudson Garcia, Nate Mendoza Alex Rubio Josh Luna, Kaiden Kitner, John sowers, Josue Rodriguez, Javier Hart, Emrique Gonzales, Isabella morales. And the list keeps going on and on. Over 40 state titles listed here.

Start naming the colleges they have gone to or committed to please. Segovia doesn’t coach he’s a salesman and markets the team Nunez can’t keep a room together no one is loyal to him. Who’s mando valdez?

Pepe has been the coach for many years. He was under Cerna, but hes always been in that room and hes the one who leaves that wrestling room open year round inviting and welcoming everyone. And Mando Valdez is one of Zillahs head coaches a 2 x state champ. Ever heard of Underground wrestling it was introduced by Mando. He and pepe formed a team bad boy underground and they were the best for a while.

Not even close to Barnes, Anderson, Paulus, Feist, or Garza out of ML. The guys you mention are good "keep kids off the street" coaches. You might want to be careful of what you are presenting here. If they run year round programs and they are are affiliated with a high school team. Isn't that out of season at some point? Hmmm...

You can practice year round, just not folkstyle. Freestyle and Greco all off season if you want.

Travis Ayers has had a hand in Tricity kids for quite some time, Gurr, Anderson, Johnsons, Halo, Gonzales, Almaguer, the list goes on and on. he has had some serious National Champs and several state champs in his room and it was all because his mentoring..Even Valley kids were in the room to wrestle his kids. He won't take credit for it but he is a special coach for sure!

Drury is better than all those kids you just listed how many people forgot he is actually ranked inching closer to the top 10 in D1. And he is only a freshman this season. And why list Paulus? Mainly all his state champs were Victory wrestlers. Josiah Rodriguez, Diego Castaneda, Jessie Torres, Jesse Barajas, Eli barajas. And there is more but its just funny how many state champs from sunnyside were Victory wrestlers.

CLub coaches will never win state championships. They can't, its a high school tournament. Clubs don't worry about grades, attendance, transportation costs, inexperienced wrestlers etc. Paulus had over 100 wrestlers in his room two, three years in a row. That's a program. Not one person. or two or three. Some of the others mentioned had big numbers too. No cherry picking, no Facebook pages or "look at me posts" Chris Castillo was better.

WIAA HANDBOOK Allows for coaching of any style of wrestling year round provided it is a USAW tournament.

You're not correct. Reread that and look at the comma. The comma shows the difference in the three things. The WIAA says: (interscholastic/collegiate/folk style/ USA wrestling) is different than freestyle and greco. Therefore, a coach CAN coach freestlye and Greco year round, but not interscholastic/collegiate/folk style/ USA wrestling because of the out of season rule..

That is correct Coach. I reread it a few times just now for clarification. However, a WA high school coach CAN coach any style after the last day of school and before the first day of classes per WIAA.

Last day of spring sports State tournament and the last day of July is the open window for coaching your high school team. This includes assistants and volunteers, anyone on the coaches roster for the winter season. But the question is why? Everyone does it anyway. Go to Reno, check out Freakshow this weekend and tell me what you see.

Haters gonna hate, someone in Toppenish is salty. Majority of those names they all traveled and trained with other clubs especially Torres boys/girl, Godinez, Zuniga boys, yes even Drury, Estrada trained with Victory, Morales all over the place, Andy and Romero trained other places too. Godina trained elsewhere too. Sowers was an East valley elite kid and went to Davis. Rubio was in other rooms too. The list goes on correct me if I'm wrong. Bet

Mike Sowards from Orting has to be in the top 3! 2 runnerups followed by 4 straight team titles before he rides off into the sunset. Give me a break. Go Cards. Probably the top team among all classes at least twice during that time.

Drury never trained with Victory nor did Godinez. Or Rubio, especially him he disliked them so much. Even after his favorite coach Joey Riojas left to Victory. And yeah they were in other rooms but they spent 75% of the time in that Toppenish room. And thats why I said Tony Nunez as well because a lot of them were Team Takedown and Toppenish Bad boy. And Sowers was team Takedown for a while. And Drury was Team Takedown Express but he spent most of his training days in Toppenish. And Estrada barely made the switch to Victory only a few years ago. Its funny though they made history and the coaches get no recognition give Credit where its due to coach Kitner, Segovia, Zuniga, Torrez. All those Toppenish coaches.

Yo Pepe is my boy. I have step in and vouch for him cause I know he means good all the time. That Coach has opened his room to me , my boys and other club kids and let me tell you if he's a salesman, marketing or whatever and is managing to coach some tough wrestlers that dominate the scene whether it be Washington, Oregon, Idaho and compete with those tough California teams than shit Washington coaches need to all become salesmen. What's funny my Dawg Pepe is a scary hombre and I'm a betting man that you fools talking shit do not , I repeat DO NOT have the balls to confront that man and tell him all this smack talking face to face. Easy boy. He wasn't saying much. He was just trying to be cleaver and cute. Everyone knows that Pepe is the power behind the current Toppenish reign. They are lucky to have someone in town to develop the talent. Every city should be so lucky but they are few and far between. Just enjoy the ride while it is there as Pepe will eventually get old and retire and the dominance will end. We have all seen clubs and teams rise and fall over the years based on one man being there and then leaving. Give it a rest as you know you got a good one.

I wouldn’t go that far. Zuniga has 2 kids who are top kids in Washington state and another who will also dominate. I’m sure their success is a big part of something he is doing right. Same goes for Torres who coach’s his 2 sons and also has his daughter who will dominate in the same fashion. Pretty much proves the dads are doing all the work in that wrestling room and letting Dem Boys take all the credit.

Look, those kids were not solely in the Toppenish room. They all trained in other rooms. Their parents post it all over social media thru out the years. Some of them even trained in Zillah with Mando.

There are a couple things not right with this thread. While all of the listed are "good" coaches, not all are list worthy if you are talking about "best" decade coaches in WA. How are you basing this - what is the criteria? Most wins? Most state championships? Most State placers?

Reichert would be on that list. Breckenridge would be on that list. Strand would be on it well before half of those listed above. Is this a thread about how good Toppenish currently is or how good everyone else is?. Since I have no dog in this fight, I will say Toppenish is the best team in the state right now, period. No 3A or 4A team could touch them in a dual and everyone here knows it. Is this really about club coaches or high school? And what does last decade really mean? 2010-2020? Because last decade versus career would make a big difference in this list. Maybe we should all be enjoying the success of all those coaches, club or school, are having since we aren't that tough of state comparatively. Just my two cents.

Who is Mondo? Did he have the nephew who he trained his whole high school career and couldn’t get better than a top 5 in Washington State all 4 years of HS. Who has he trained? Same goes for Pepe he has never trained anyone credible to say he’s a great coach. Nunez has trained a number of kids who are top competitors boys/girls. Not a-lot can say that.

Nunez hand picks those kids, if you really know then you know. Just shut your mouth ! Pepe trains alot of kis Valley wide. Ask around and try will tell you. Kids from Orting to Hermiston he has never said he's to take full credit. He simply just trains whomever wants to train. Mondo trains a handful of kids as well not a bad guy. Bottom line is whoever is training Dem Boyz "TOPPENISH" is the one getting all the credi. This thread is over! I'm tired of hearing of Toppenish and their egotistic coaches and parents. They are good!

Pepe has never once gave himself all the credit. He’s always gave the credit to the coaches that has helped him and step up. He’s a respectful person and very well humble man. All my kids have gone to sunnyside and he’s always treated us equal with all the wrestlers in the wrestling room. He has always invited kids from all over the valley and kids from the west side to come over and train and welcome any one that wanted to get it. But yes there are parents that go in and out there time in without getting paid and don’t want nothing but mat time for there kids as well. If you been in the toppenish wrestling room than you know damn well how it really goes down in there. Those kids do all the work and all the kids rather it be past or future wrestlers, they all help eachother our. As a parent I have nothing but the upmost love and respect for toppenish and there volunteers that make it happen for all dem kids

Let's not play the honorable coach with Pepe, Nunez, Flaca, any of them. Including us ALL from Yakima area, myself included. We ALL knew the head coach and his wife were having very inappropriate relationships with students, plus alcohol, carrying guns on campus while intoxicated, etc... Everyone knew about it, yet we ALL remained silent. Even now as Cerna sits in self inflicted pharmacy addicted comatose with a new girl, his wife is going to take the brunt of his shadyness and it will be cricket's a word wont be said... yet we will all congratulate that staff on another solid season, and fully ignore the ZERO life lessons we have taught those boys and girls. LV

Last I checked those coaches guided those kids to a great season and DEM BOYZ AND GIRLS MADE HISTORY. You sound like an angry coach/parent who didn’t see results in there kid or coach. But again give credit due when it’s due. And my hats off to the TOPPENISH WRESTLING STAFF AND COACHES P.S HATERS WILL HATE THE GAMES WILL KEEP ON GOING SASSS

Maybe the boys were coached by them but as for Isabella morales she was coached and trained by her brother behind closed doors not even alexio .

There are good coaches there obviously. But the best coach in the last 10 years is Barnes from Lake Stevens. Multiple State and Team Champions. Woman’s world team coach as well. Every top High School Coach in the USA knows who he is and respects him. You can’t say that yet for the rest of these guys.

The choice for top coach over the last decade is clear and not even close. John Cerna of Dem Boyz Toppenish. Any coach willing to share his house, his drugs, and his wife with his athletes is on another level. He’s playing chess while we are all still playing checkers. He’s in a world all his own, we’re just mere pawns living in it.

After reading through this thread I had to reflect on the book, the "the .000001% wrestler". There is a chapter that addresses this very topic. "To go full Croton or not to go full Croton" (chapter 16).
Chapter 16, talks about Milo of Croton and his coach Diotimus. Was he the best coach ever? Diotimus surely should be considered the best coach, the results cannot be denied. He literally gave Milo the cow. He literally trained the greatest wrestler ever. He trained Milo in the dirt circle daily, but did his lessons fail to extend beyond the dirt circle? Did Diotimus' full Croton coaching approach lead to the death of the greatest wrestler ever?
What we do know:
Diotimus didn't teach the champion to be cautious. He didn't teach him that lions are scary. He didn't teach him that ripping stumps in half for the ladies was a waste of time (Both huge mistake imo, this should be taught to all our wrestlers day 1!).
So with this thread, are we talking about the best coaches or the winningest coaches, because those are two very different things.

I think you can honestly even throw in these guys name in the hat. Smaller schools, but stand out programs, even when they go to tri-state and other multi division tournaments;

I am looking at this and I’m not really quite sure all of the names really fit coaches that actually develop all of their wrestlers I recognize that some kids transfer over as well as kids are in the district but take a look and my question is which coaches are actually developing wrestlers I’m not talking about the coaches that kids come into their program and make it exponentially better. So with that taken out of the spectrum to be able to rate a coach accordingly as such who are the best coaches of the last decade? Because when I’m thinking about it I look at coaches Who don’t have transfers coming in or kids moving to their district for the purpose of wrestling. Who are those coaches? Those are the names I would like to see I’m not saying the above coaches in question either know or do not know how to coach but if you take 10 amazing wrestlers and put them on a team those 10 amazing wrestlers are going to bring in more amazing wrestlers.

The answer is nobody, zero, nada. All HS programs benefit from club coaches. PERIOD! To sit here on the toilet and try to take this question seriously is only making me constipated.

Best should be defined by number of state titles. Taking any other criteria will only lead to feelings. I feel like… or this coach really pushed me… or any other opinion that might be true to that person is only a non-measurable opinion.

Answer to best coach: who has the most state titles in the last decade. Period.

So based on the last poster the only criteria for a great coach is titles. I have been around wrestling for many many years and know of many great cos he’s that have never one state titles. I could take a terrible coach and have all the best kids transfer in and that team no matter who the coach is will win state titles does they then make him the best coach. There are many coaches out there they I would consider great coaches have never one a title but taken kids that have never wrestled before or had kids from clubs teams on them and not only made them great wrestlers but more importantly great men. My examples of those coaches are Sean gaspiere from Curtis. Jason Wiklund from Washington to make a few and I would almost certainly think of you asked coaches around they would agree with me they are very good if not great coaches
