State Participant/Placer Wall of Fame Question

What does your room do for keeping track of state participants and placers? What board or recognition company do you use? I am looking to put one in my wrestling room but not sure which companies or methods are best and cost affective. Looking for easy boards to update and not cost a ton.

How do you acknowledge state placers vs participants? Do you? How do you acknowledge state champs?

For example, my high school always put the names up on our wrestling room wall by painting the names of participants in one color and champs in another. They have since changed them and now hand banners that have names printed on them as a list by year.

Good for you for wanting to preserve some history and recognize some guys/girls. Honestly, it's one of the bigger things some kids will ever have in their lives. There are several names on my high schools board of guys who didn't make it to 30, and I always felt a glad that they will live on up there on that wall for all time, captured in one of their finest moments. As an aside, God, I wish my HS recognized participants. I would be on the wall 4×. Instead, I'm not on there a single time. 4× and no medal, can you believe that? It has been a long time and I still can't. Anyway, having something easily updated is fairly complex. Our school had a beautiful cedar 4×6 finished board with little metal placards, all in rows of about 10-15. It made for a gorgeous wall with rows of perfectly uniform names.

However, I have seen several schools use cheaper, vinyl 3×6 or 3×8 foot banners with vinyl letters steamed/glued on. Those don't look awesome but are cheap and work well if you've got 100 names to put on there (or more). If you don't have many names, maybe go smaller. Any decent sign shop in your local area could definitely help brainstorm.

Get this...

Imagine elementary, middle school, and high school kids seeing these types of displays. We don't get to control which sport they choose but they might think: "I WANT TO BE ON THAT WALL!"

Other wrestlers might be inspired enough to want to be on the wall, or at least see it's a possibility.

I can tell you the moment I stepped into my high school wrestling room my freshman year I saw peoples names on the wall and asked what it was all about. I was motivated about getting my name on our school wall before graduating. Especially the name that was done in a special color meaning you won a state title. My HS had the names painted on the wall. They eventually switched it to vinyl banners because they were running out of room and it was getting harder to painting the names.

Certainly a motivator for me! Something I share with my athletes now and it is helping them get motivated to get their name up on the wall. I just need to get one up. :-)

Here are mine. I used Team Fitz for my boards. PVC great add a name boards. 950 for the board and it is 10.00 for the added names after your board is printed

And state champions have a sleeve tattoo on my left arm.

Love it! I certainly would have been motivated to get you to tattoo my name or get to get a sleave. Beats the "If you place at state I will dye my hair pink or shave my head" incentive.

Hey Oak Harbor, that's a great looking board! It would be cool for this thread to have people share what their room's boards look like so that the OP has some different visuals to choose from?

There's always the ole "homemade HS woodshop special," like schools used to do. If your school has a shop, borrow some plywood, paint it, stencil the names on there, the year and the placing. Line the years chronologically on one side so that it has a nice, uniform appearance. Put out an APB around the school to find kids who can paint, have them paint the school name/mascot on there.

I can't even tell you how many hundreds of placer walls have some iteration of what I have described above. If possible, doing it all in house makes it real cheap. Depends on if you have a woodshop, though. I think as long as it recognizes the kids you're trying to recognize and has some semblance of permanence, it'll do the trick.

Thanks for the reply and the example. Especially the name of the company. Gives me a starting point and idea.

In your example, to add the names you order them for $10. Is is hard to add them to the board? Easy to keep straight and such?

Super easy to add-a-name. The company sends you them and instructions how to do it. It does look sharp. Someday I will add a Top 10 team to the board.

This is such a great idea. One coach I know will only acknowledge the state 1st placers. I think it's total BS when everyone in the room contributes and if you're able to place you deserve to be acknowledged.

Connell has some thin wood cut into Washington state they are painted gold with the year, name, placers and placings in purple. and the team placing on the peninsula. they are pretty sharp and dont take up a lot of room. they have them all since 1962 and still have plenty of room to add more.
