I know this is a tricky topic and has been discussed before. I agree whenever possible a ref should not officiate his own child's match. Sometimes, as in this years craziness and lack of officials, I am not sure it was preventable. When we moved to Pennsylvania in 2014 I was a ref at my sons club tournament. I was on the mat he was wrestling and I switched with another ref to avoid any conflict what so ever. Me personally, I don't care who's on the mat I blow the whistle the same way, my kid or not, but I do understand the bias some might think could happen. The bottom line is this, we need more refs. High school and college kids coming back into the sport, making some money, and keeping the numbers in associations up as they are dwindling. All old talk, nothing new, and some associations are trying new things to bring guys in. Wrestling dads need to step up as well IMO. I've officiated my son twice, once he pinned his opponent and the other was pinned. I had no emotions until after the match as it was my duty to call it as I would any match. I think most refs do the same...plus we want to watch our own kids wrestle from the side not on the mat! I'll tell you this, many dads in PA are refs as they have been in the sport very seriously for a long time, and they are very good!|
