Is there a potential to need to self-ref matches?

Howdy,
What would be a good contingency plan is we do not have enough referees for the start of the season? Dual mechanic refereeing with both assistant coaches from the competing schools?

Ideas?

That might be a good idea. Also in WSWA tournaments, many of the kids have Officials credentials and ref too. I'm not sure how high school parents would react, but these kids do a good job of being impartial. I would think most HS teams have kids that have reffed on the weekends for years.

Why dont all the people who spent the last year flipping out out on losing there “freedom” to covid precautions go ahead and get your ref certs so you can help the sport out.

We would love to but I can’t leave my house because I can’t afford my taxes. Infrastructure taxes go Biden!

I do not think refs make a lotnof money. That was in response to the trumper up above blaming biden for being broke.

Your point about helping the sport out by becoming an official is nothing new (albeit spot on), however now may be the most important time in history in doing just that. This sport, and especially in WA where the long timers are older and will be retiring, needs new younger and middle age dads, fans, ex wrestlers to become officials. I have officiated for some time and although we do not work for the check you can make a nice little check at the end of the season. I don't look at it as working for a check, rather doing something I love, being around the sport I love, hopefully contributing good officiating and I'd do it for free so getting a little something is a bonus. The younger guys always need to earn some cash for college or whatever so it's a win/win. My checks range from 2500-3500 per season which makes up for travel and donating back to the sport. Having coaches ref is great when needed but we need officials out there!

I second your comments Gary. We are running low on current officials and as I look around the room I see a lot of aging officials that are giving their all but can see the end of their officiating road in the near future. That includes me. I think age 65 is a good retirement age for most people. Time takes its toll on everyone and eventually there comes a time for every official to step down. We need new officials NOW to get trained, or you will see a profound lack in the near future. Hard to have a competition without officials. We need some middle aged dads with an interests in helping the sport for 10-15 years so the kids continue to have oportunities. JMHO

Totally agree with both of you. The problem is some of the coaches and parents run the younger or less experienced officials off. I remember when I was just getting started there was a rule that required anyone who was red carded, to take or retake a coaching class and officiate a tournament before they were allowed to coach again. It kept some of them in check and the ones that had to take the class and officiate found out what it was like making a call from the perspective of the official. We even pick up a few new officials because if this.
