Mixed feelings on this decision.

Cons: If you are a Freestyle/Greco-Roman wrestler, this is a bummer...especially for WESCO 4A (only a total of five schools in the league). If the rest of the state goes as currently planned, the high school season for WESCO and the Freestyle/Greco-Roman season would occur at the same time.

Pros: Higher chance there will be a high school season, allowing more time for Covid numbers to decrease and make way for high risk indoor sports. This is great for the multi-sport high school athlete, or those who only wrestle Folkstyle.

The other upside is that the WIAA may see the writing on the wall and change its seasons to match those that the WESCO is proposing which would increase the chance of us having a wrestling season.

How in the world could sports ever be more important than actually opening the schools for EDUCATIONAL purpose's. Lets FIRST get the schools OPEN with in class education..... fuk inslee.... Don't get me WRONG, I love sports and think it should be a mandatory subject, just like the old presidential award.

You are absolutely correct, but there are now even more forces fighting against schools opening. It’s sad to say, but now teacher’s unions are fighting it. I always thought people went into teaching for the kids, now teachers are pushing to continue the worst thing we have seen happen to our children for as long as I can remember. Any thoughts for anyone? I’m sincerely curious to hear the other perspective. We should be able to protect teachers at risk and still educate our children.

Unfortunately, for many school districts, the teacher's union is the biggest opposition to reopening.

I have many friends in the teaching profession. The ones I have spoken to are all for reopening with reasonable precautions in place. It only takes a few teachers pushing the union to file unfair labor practice complaints resulting with schools staying closed.

Problem is with public/government entities, they are in no win predicaments all the time. Our civil courts allow for frivolous lawsuits and there is a belief public/government entities have "big pockets", with unlimited funds to pay out on bogus lawsuits. More often than not, government entities pay out on the lawsuits because going to trial can be more costly.

A big reason school districts are incredibly cautious about reopening are due to "liabilities" placed on them from employees, students, and parents.

This pandemic being so politicized, with mixed reviews within the science community, combined with media influence, has bogged everything down and there are no 100% solutions....this causes many to go into the default of "let's just restrict everything, just in case".

Why wouldn’t a school district just have a few workers per department and furlough the rest of the teachers? It seems like what so many other businesses and entities do. If you “laid-off” 50-70% of the workforce I am sure the union would change its policy on safety and who is at risk. Might even get teachers to sign a release of liability form, and come back to work with a smile on their face.

I think you underestimate the teacher’s union. You would never be able to just “furlough” any teachers without cause, let alone 50-60% of them. I agree with Springer, Covid is being used as a political weapon by everyone for their own agendas and in the end, it’s really the kids that are losing out the most.

Although I agree about your comment regarding WESCO wrestling, it's about all sports and the order/time frame for each sport....makes the most sense.....

Mr. Springer hit the nail on the head regarding lawsuits. I do not recall the ranking that I recently read in the paper but that state of washington is right at the top (Laws passed) of being the easiest for government agencies (school districts) to be sued in court. Guess which party lawyers give most their political donations too? Hint... They been running the state for 30+ yrs

Springer is spot on about the lawsuits. You will see in the next few weeks that Teachers will be scheduled to get the vaccine. From the first injection to the 2nd it will take 21 days. But I can see a fair amount of parents that will want to sue the District when their kid gets Covid.

But Wesco AD’s agreeing to get the ball rolling is huge. You don’t think the AD’s from around the State will now try to follow? They will.

It's nice to see the efforts of Wesco set a detailed plan in place. Will it be effective enough for WIAA to follow suit, who knows. The one thing that is overlooked in all the current and past threads about wrestling season and Covid is that regardless of the WIAA offering a season to any sport, if a respective county is not under the ratio of cases versus population then there will be no sports in that county. Despite any effort from conferences or WIAA, no school district will go against the health department or Governor's orders. This is where the word "liability" gets thrown around a lot. This is unfortunate but also a damning truth. Then we talk about the aforementioned teachers concerns and availability of a vaccine that will hopefully get the kids back in school.

IMO I truly believe that the high risk sports should have been moved to Spring a long time ago (April-June) to allow for all these factors to be more controlled and have a realistic chance of happening. I moved Gut Check to June 2021 back in September when reality hit that we have some serious formalities to deal with. I was hoping to see the same from other events instead of just cancelling them for the entire year. We all want a season of some sort but with an already shortened season (if it happens) my heart really goes out the these kids as they keep losing opportunities.

I do hope the first step is getting these kids back in school. If the vaccine is effective and the teachers feel that will get them back in the classroom then by all means there is a light at the end of the tunnel for this year! With the allotted amount of vaccines coming in this first round to WA currently and having all medical professionals, law enforcement and first responders vaccinated first, does that leave us with enough vaccines to get all teachers, admin, bus drivers and district employees a shot so they can be at school sooner than later?

Getting kids together in smaller groups should be the first step. That''s how schools are doing it around the nation - hybrid. 1/2 the kids one day the other half the next day. If we are starting with small groups then it makes sense sports could come before school or in conjunction with hybrid. If you wait for full in person learning for all kids to come back before sports which are smaller groups, you won't have sports this year at all.

Lawsuits.... I think this is partly a scare tactic and an overrated argument.. Many states with higher rates than Washington are in hybrid and have sports. If anyone should sue it's parents whose kids are being denied a proper education.d

Teacher Unions -If 60% belong to the union - then 40% don't - If the 40% would stand up on their position they would put school district in a very uncomfortable position. You can't have school with 60%^ gone - but you can't have school with 40% gone either. I agree - it's very political to gain power and advantage where and when you want it.

Parents should be given the option - want your kids face to face you can have them face to face with teachers who also wan to be face to face. Scared your going to die? Fine - go online with students and teachers who feel the same. It's not that hard. Many states have created full time online options and in class options both- you don't have to do all or nothing. Unfortunately big cities like Seattle and Portland have the attitude that if they can't do it, nobody can.

At this point it's not about wrestling. If WESCO is doing something it doesn't matter if it overlaps with freestyle. It really doesn't. This is about getting kids out of their home - back in society - back competing - back with each other. The suicide rate is increasing. Just saw an article out of Spokane on this. The bigger picture is more important here.

Where do you think that only 60% of the teachers are in the union? It's more like 97% are in.

it was mandatory to join until recently when the Supreme Court ruled it couldn’t be mandated. Now they take the dues out anyway as a terms of employment. It’s heavy coercion. I have a friend in Seattle who pretty much says that she is forced to be part of it but does not believe in it. Perhaps others who teach in other locations can chime in. I do know 97% does not indicate who actually supports the union. I imagine they would be in quite a conundrum if even 20% went against the online only. It would be like the ACLU suing itself.

The old rule required that you pay union dues, however you did not need to be a part of the union. You could donate that money somewhere else if you wanted to, but it had to come out. Teachers benefit from the union, just like other union employees. If you look at states where there is no union, teachers make way less.

The kids in those states unlike Washington are getting an education.As well as competing in sports and other school activities. No high school kids are dying of covid.

Good luck on donating your dues to another charitable organization. A close friend of mine did that, when he had some disciplinary action he was so screwed. One small thing got him fired. It’s a “toe the line, pay your dues, and keep your head down”, type situation.
