So Monday, I was driving and realizing that it should have been the first practice of high school wrestling season and all the scrambling you needed to do as a coach so that you can get your wrestlers 10 practices for a Jamboree on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and 12 practices before first meet and tournament. Getting all the kids through weight management, getting the parents to realize you are not taking Thanksgiving weekend off or much of Christmas off either. Practice, Practice and Practice some more. But that is not happening this year. All of it takes discipline and determination.
But for those still coaching out there, I hope you still coach when this is over. One of my wrestlers just reached out, 8 years after graduation to thank me for coaching him in high school. He attributes much of his success thus far in his life to the hard work and discipline he learned from wrestling and the culture of the team. What you do as a coach makes a difference. This is the real tragedy of the response to COVID-19.
Whenever this is over, I hope wrestling comes back with a vengeance.
Unfortunately there are projected to be long term negative outcomes for this generation of high school athletes. The lockdowns and virtual schooling in states like Washington are going to have dramatic consequences mentally and physically on our youth. Kids literally sitting in front of a video screen for 8 or more hrs a day can only make this generation more obese and unhealthy than the population who are now @ greater risk of dying from covid due to obesity, diabetes etc.All you covid sheep who are ok with lockdowns just remember that you are only stretching the underlying factors to poor health mentally and physically into the future.
