Something Iíve joked about forever is having a wildcard option or mega regional where wrestlers with great resumes and who are obviously top 8 contenders can get to the dance even if donít advance in our current systems. Itís sad when kids due to illness, injury, family emergency or, usually the case, have unlucky stacked brackets donít advance. There are often top 10-15 in one bracket in a district or region where most know those wrestlers would have qualified and contended at state if they were healthy, in a different league or region, etc. (missing weight not valid). |
The girls might be a great current example (cookie crumbles) but its not hard to come up with numerous other examples over the past several years.
I think a 16 man mega regional (2 vs 4 districts) advancing 8 would fix many of these issue. Regionals would be a big draw state-wide for fans and more state caliber wrestlers would advance. I think everyone wants to see the top 16 kids at state; want the most deserving kids there based on their consistent achievements on the mat?
District 6 4A last year only having 3 representatives out of their district to state is another example (pigtail great this year). Although a small district, they have powerhouse teams in it that are 2 deep in many weight classes. There were numerous 4ís from that league that were considerably more skilled than many other kids that advanced to state. This yearís region with Toppenish, Selah, othello, Eburg, etc may be another good example just looking at how many schools from that district are in top 10. There will likely be several kids at regions that donít advance simply because the cookie crumbled wrong for them but are much better wrestlers than kids from other regions. A couple years ago when Curtis, ML, S. Kitsap, Sumner, etc were all in same region is another example and many people voiced their opinions about the inequity of it. That issue will always happen somewhere.
Wildcard concept for discussion: 3 out of each region and then leave 4 spots to fill with some sort of vote and / or criteria. If the 4th place wrestler in a region is one of the top 4 remaining kids, they will advance anyway. With this concept, the wrestlers that may not have been able to attend districts or regions for legit reasons like a family emergency, illness (concussion?), etc would still have a chance to accomplish what theyíve worked for their whole lives and we will have a better top 16 than otherwise. I hate to hear a wrestler not get to state due to something out of his or her control or a prior state placer lose two extremely tight matches in regionals due to stacked region where all 4 that did advanced to state ended up placing.
Itís obvious Iím from central Washington so my examples are local, but I know there are numerous other examples from all over the state.
In advance... no reason to berate the post simply because I live in Central Washington. Trust me, we beat each other up enough locally as is .
