We can even argue that Greg Ford is a quality coach, and brought a ready-made team through his coaching and connections with past high school wrestlers. Some who are new to college, others that now appear to be reclaimation projects. Nevertheless, fine young men who deserve a shot to wrestle again.
Greg Ford is in an absolute no-win situation. He likely overpromised his wrestlers, and got in bed with the wrong college. The irony being the fact the college now finds itself in bed with what they may have seen as a diversity hire, with a diverse group via the wrestling team...when they actually hired a REAL wrestling coach who happens to be a man of color.
If Greg Ford stood up for himself and wrestling, demanding to participate in the dual, he would likely lose his job. This would be possibly letting his wrestlers down, even if it would be the right thing to do on principle for himself and wrestling.
The one thing I would be willing to argue, a degree from Evergreen isn't worth two cents in the real world. The wrestlers he recruited would not be losing out on much, and based on the cancelation by the AD, they're already missing out on actual wrestling.
The reality is they should disband the program and let Ford to have his integrity back. Give the wrestlers who want to remain wrestling a chance to get into actual colleges that support wrestling.
