As in all forms of competition, training and preparation needs to exceed that of the opponent.
For a WA athlete, simply joining the right club or hooking with the right coach does not do it for National level events. There may be exceptions, but in most cases alot more has be done.
IF they want to be competitive at the National level then keep in mind:
A coach can't miraculously compensate for an ill prepared athlete. WA wrestlers need to be competing outside the state on a monthly basis throughout the year. Our state is not tough enough to organically develop and prepare wrestlers for National level events. We simply don't have the "hammer density" that states back east have. Iron sharpens Iron and there is not enough Iron in WA.
WA Parents need to look in the mirror before complaining about coaching. Are they themselves doing everything they can to give their athlete an honest shot at preparing for a national event. This might mean offloading that Timeshare, 5th wheel or bass boat. Preparing for National Level competition takes money. Maybe cut back on the beer, bourbon, and casino visits. Preparing for National Level wrestling takes time.
Typically, WA kids need to train and compete outside the state if they are going to be competitive at the National level.
If you want to be a WA Big Fish only, then going to your club three days a week throughout the year will get it done. Because that's more than the seasonal WA kid does.
