What are his opponent’s options? Get stuck or risk the DQ? This happens too fast for a ref to blow it dead prior, much less any wrestler to contemplate a safe mat return in the moment. Had the WV kid stopped wrestling in the first match a slam call likely would have been called and the result would be a DQ OR his opponent would have had his takedown and back points taken away plus another point for the slam. When the round ended, his coaches complained about the slam. We’ve all seen slams that weren’t called because the kids continue to wrestle and slams called after-the-fact because the slammed kid was stunned. One situation may result in a DQ or up to 6 points taken away and the other situation doesn’t even get a whistle.
In his 5/6 match, his opponent was DQ’d. We’ll never know how much head trauma could be attributed to the earlier slam that made it so he couldn’t continue this time. Malicious INTENT and/or a history of past offenses must be taken into account before a kid gets DQ’d! There are way too many instances where a dangerous situation in a combat sport simply happens in the moment. The consequence of losing a match because of them are too harsh! Goodhearted kids losing life-changing matches is simply wrong (wrestling is their life while at the dome especially). For example, getting 3rd with a personal asterisk is NOT a state title.
