Comparing boys and girls wrestling makes no sense. If you go back through my posts, I continually state that my opinion pertains to girls' wrestling. Comparing boys wrestling which has been around for 70+ years to girls' wrestling which has been around for 15 or so is like comparing basketball to lacrosse. They are totally different sports. I don't think there has been much change in participation in boys' wrestling from the 90's when I wrestled and today. I actually think the numbers are down, at least at Davis where I coach. Kids seem to have changed and the attrition rate is extremely high compared to earlier generations, but that's a whole different conversation.
Girls' and women's wrestling is growing by leaps and bounds. Our girls team had 10-12 last year and doubled that number this year. With that kind of growth, you have to create opportunities for these kids to fail and to succeed. That means the opportunities to get to state, taste the wine, and work harder next year to do better. Is the quality in each division going to suffer? Of course it will, but in the long run it will get better because with growing numbers comes better quality especially at the top. The overall quality of competition will also be better because competition creates better wrestlers.
The other thing I will mention is that high school wrestling isn't the only thing driving these decisions. Everyone knows that the kids who are top notch and getting to the national levels are not only wrestling in high school. Wrestling should be one part of a student-athlete's life that is part of their overall growth to become a great human being and successful adult. Splitting divisions is small beans compared to other more pressing issues in these kids' lives. Let's be supportive adults and not be fixated on things we have no control over.
