My son wrestled for a school that watered down the schedule and practices so that the fringe kids might stay around all season. Since the team was small (not even a full Varsity line up), I thought maybe that was the way to go.
It didn't work out. Some fringe kids still quit and the others never improved. Worse . . . the dedicated kids lost interest because they weren't being challenged.
It showed me that it is far better to have a small dedicated team. At least they will have individual success and that success will attract others seeking achievement and who are willing to work.
Lowering the bar doesn't make anyone happy and the team will never have success. Without success, the team won't install pride in its members or community . . . and it will never grow.
There is a reason the saying "Nothing succeeds like success." is a cliché' . . . it's been proven right again and again over time.
