Re: Shorten the high school season/ or move it
I have to admit, I fully agree with the lack of numbers and injuries that pile up. Wrestling is a miserable sport in many ways but so worth it when having your hand raised. And though kids walk away after the season in the best shape of their lives and having done something amazing by just completing the season, I fear we lose a lot of kids on the fence if turning out, or the ones who do and then never fully commit to being their daily to reap the benefits. The concern I’d have with starting later is that the idle hands after fall sports would likely cause a worse turn out. Too many kids would move on to other sports or off season training for fall or spring sports. Just a couple of weeks shorter would go a long way into preserving the health both mentally and physically for the kids. Perhaps shorten the time after the last outing of the season going into districts. I think 5 hardcore practices before districts, 5 more before regionals, and then 3 before state can be a very grueling and even counter productive process. As you stated, die hard wrestlers will make it through but we need the rest to want to be there. Tourneys traditionally held on Saturdays can be moved to a week day and in a sense condensing down some of those spaces in between events that’s filled with practices of 90min live sessions. Just a thought.
