By the mid 70's Washington had over 30 college wrestling programs and had no difficulty filling full line-ups with non scholarship walk-ons. We now have only Highline Community college left and it sounds like they are struggling.
The difference between now and then is we did not start wrestling until entering high school not at the age of 5. While I do support some exposure at younger ages I strongly oppose the intensity we have in youth wrestling. Our youth mature at different ages and many drop out before realizing their potential. Kid wrestling gyms are full and by high school many are nearly empty.
The college situation is not the fault of the graduating seniors. They have put in their time and choose to move on.
For those who still have the passion take a look at Pacific or any college offering wrestling. You will not regret taking a shot.
