I highly doubt ML wrestler wants Davis wrestler to get DQ’d?Based on watching him over the years, he wants to beat the best on his way to win title and...he’s proven he can so he’s not one to avoid the challenge. In addition, there surely be an asterisks next to his title if Davis wrestler was DQ’d. I didn’t see match, but was in the gym. I heard both sides. It sounds like knee in “real time” didn’t appear as blatant to many as is expressed in this thread or the ML fans after the match. I’m not saying it wasn’t—idk. However, refs would have made a VERY consequential call if DQ’d— a DQ should only occur post-season if based on indisputable evidence real time that would be readily supported by mass majority of coaches and refs. I personally don’t think it was overly obvious to that extent real time or ML coaches (experienced and assertive) would have chosen to end the match right then win or lose simply out of principle if nothing else. Benefit of doubt MUST be given to the kids before ending their post season. It’s not like an in-season DQ; not even close.
I think most agree that Davis wrestler deserves significant discipline IF video shows blatant.... but that’s up to his coaches and AD (perhaps scrutinized due to Abeyta’s on-going antics the last 4 years and maybe). If WIAA decides to get involved and DQ, then there’s no more argument.
As Pham stated, there’s often much more going on in a kid’s life than we see on the mat. Wrestling room brings that out. If the privilege to compete is one of the few positives in their lives (I know nothing about the Davis wrestler), I’d be extremely cautious before taking it from them—a different consequence better?
Regardless, a DQ call in the moment would have been bad for everyone: Davis wrestler and team, ML wrestler and team, all contenders at 113 State-wide and wrestling fans.
