Smart Four Two 2007 - Gearbox issues / Non Start #
Posted by John Hall on December 2, 2019, 2:43 pm
Year of Manufacture: 2007
The vehicle was recovered with not only a flat battery but non start / gearbox fault.
Upon a global scan the only faults are:
ABS C1323 CAN communication to transmission ECU C1326 CAN Communication to transmission ECU
Gearbox P1800 Gearbox control
The famous 3 bars are showing in the instrument cluster in place of the gear selected indicator.
I have tried to re-calibrate both clutch and gearbox motors but both failed and showed as incomplete. No obvious noise form either motor during this.
Checked power supplies, earths, CAN lines, all connections between control unit and both gearbox / clutch motors / position sensors.
Live data within gearbox control showed position of gear lever so assume this is ok.
Any 'Smart / MCC' technicians with previous experience on these that could guide me please ?
My only thoughts from here are brake lamp switches both hard wired to ABS module and show as working in live data but it has communication faults stored so are these getting into the gearbox control ???

Hi John I had something similar a few years ago with a smart where sometimes the car would die then not restart and the 3 bars would flash in the cluster. Annoyingly intermittant and every man and his dog had looked at the car to no avail. I used it for about a week and it seemed to do it most over bumps/round sharp bends, die as above, then restart 5 mins later. I found if I wiggled the connector to the SAM control unit (under passenger dash) it would start. So I opened up the SAM unit (you have to bend the 3 circuit boards apart!)and looked at the board with a magnifying glass. Turns out all the pins where the connector plugged into had dry soldered joints! resoldered all the pins (tricky if I remember) and it never happened again! One VERY happy chappie as he was about to scrap it!
