Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 TD - Slow cranking after DMF replacement #

Hello lads, I’ve come across this problem a few times (I can’t be the only one)! The problem I’ve had is a common rail diesel won’t crank fast enough to build sufficient rail pressure after new clutch & dual mass flywheel replacement. I’ve fitted new starters before & problem solved. My thought is that the old flywheel & starter gear had worn together but new flywheel & worn starter gear don’t mesh correctly causing slow cranking. Does anyone have any tech bulletins or any other thoughts (as I’m being taken to court over this issue by a customer who wouldn’t listen to my advice).

Hi Alan

To be honest cant remember having this particular problem, not that we fit that many DMF's Unless pinion was very / visibly badly worn i would expect increased noise to be more of a issue than crank speed (with old pinion on new ring gear)

do recall a problem once where starter dowels where missed when refitting and that caused a slow crank issue. I suppose always risk of poor earth & damaged wires / crank sensor, clearly these would be addressed FOC before handing car over to customer

sorry to hear this has got as far as court, are you willing to elaborate on the situation, must be more than cost of a starter motor.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I will get the full reg. number tomorrow when I’m back at work Peter, thanks. It was a vectra 1.9td (fiat engine). I will elaborate a little Aidan, I recovered vehicle in with clutch fluid leak (only to find parts already stripped like battery & air box etc). Anyway slave leaking so gearbox removed to find dmf so worn that pressure plate was wearing bell housing. Customer gave the go-ahead (even though was more than the car was worth) for new clutch kit & dmf. When finished car did take a little longer cranking than normal sometimes but didn’t think much of this as never heard it running before. Anyway, customer said it was fine before so I booked it back in to check. Rail pressure around 200 bar on cranking with a good battery & injector leak off not excessive, so I suggested replacing the starter motor as it sounded slow. (I did remove it to check location dowel & see if there was any “adjustment “). Customer (with Haynes manual check list in hand) didn’t believe his starter motor could be at fault & I didn’t see that I should pay for a new one. (I offered to fit a second hand one for free to prove my point). Had a court letter saying that he had to scrap car & claiming money back plus inconvenience costs

Sounds to me that its certainly not you fault and you have made a fair offer.

Cant see why having spent that money he would scrap it for price of a starter.

I would ask for an independent report from a respected engineer as to reason why your repair was at fault and reasons /fault why vehicle was not repairable.

Enter a defense, these claims are often speculative on the basis you wont contest and they will get judgment by default.

Just cant help some customers, i had one last week intermittent running fault, traced to in tank fuel pump, replaced pump,needed an MOT failed on SRS light on so traced and fixed the SRS fault total invoice MOT parts & labour £310 + vat customer moaned like hell about the bill ! Not to mention the fact that we had made a special 1.5 hr journey to collect pump from dealer (as they needed car quickly) and I had arranged to meet them after hours as only time they could collect it after repair.
