Ford S-Max 1.6d 2011 - Big end gone #

Posted by Chris Angus on January 26, 2018, 4:09 pm

Year of Manufacture *: 2011
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1.6d T1WB

Just doing a rebuild on this, one big end has gone, no bearing left, all the others including mains look good. So assuming lubrication was good and has been caused by something else, would I be looking at a bad injector?

Have you measured piston protrusion, in case it's had a gulp of water?
If that's okay then, yes I'd be taking a good look at the fuel system.

Thanks for the reply. No I haven't checked that, there is no big end bearing left on that one rod, so it was already low in the cylinder.

Can you update the PCM to the latest software?

Just had a thought, we've recently put a new block in a 2016 Transit 2.2TDCi rwd, due to a cracked piston (110,00miles full dealer history - so covered by goodwill). We contacted technical to ask if it was worth replacing no.1 injector, they just said, flash it with latest software!

Hello Chris, this is usually caused by a spun shell, my view is that the shell spins in the con rod & without lubrication to the outside of the shell it overheats. (will probably want a new con rod & crank re-grind/replacement if there’s no bearing left).
Tony, I’ve done a few of those 2.2 puma engines with cracked pistons caused by a faulty injector. You can see a perfect bore hole through the piston centred to the injector tip.

That sounds about right, needs regrind and new rod, just want to make sure I find the cause so it doesn't do it again.
