Owner brought this one in to us as he had been to the local Audi dealer. they had diagnosed a faulty camshaft position sensor, and he wanted us to replace it.
Having replaced the sensor we now have a DTC P0016 - camshaft position sensor coherence. This code appears as soon as the engine is running.
Can anyone tell me if these engines stretch their timing chain, or if the variable cam timing is a known trouble on these.
I dont have time today to look further into it, so will need to rebook for next week, but a heads up on known issues with this engine would be welcome.

Thanks

In a simple answer YES.
Chains go adjusters go, guides fail and the timing moves.
Possibly best thing to do is scope the cam and crank to confirm.

Thanks Ian.

So the VVT is not normally an issue then?

So a full chain kit will be the way forward if the scope confirms my suspicions.

Thanks for the reply Ian.
I fitted a new chain, tensioner & all the guide rails for the camshaft chain, (left the oil pump & balancer chains alone).
I found the tensioner wasn't locking on it's ratchet. no other obvious fault, but the chain design was slightly different so obviously modified.
Cleared fault codes, road tested = all good, no EML, whereas before the EML and code returned immediately. Not the cheapest of jobs though, but used all VAG parts, no point messing and hoping with aftermarket bits on a job like that.

Chocolate cam chains and guides now seem to be a common failing, why is this??

Glad you got it sorted.
No point messing with cheap aftermarket parts on ANY job at all !!!!
99% of what we fit is genuine, a few exceptions of clutches etc which are them all genuine LUK from a very trusted supplier.
Cant remember the last time we had to do a warranty claim !!!
