VW Passat 2007 TDi - ELS adjustment clutch change #

Year of Manufacture *: 2007
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: tdi

Were doing a clutch on the above car, we've been told that its a self adjusting clutch.

Were going to change the clutch and dmf according to the box tho it states you need a special tool for the clutch alignment, Luk n0 4000237 10 to ensure that the cover assembly maintains the correct adjustment.
It looks like a standard aligement tool will do the job to me. Any one fitted this type of clutch before??

spoken to a few other garages and they say they have never used the tool and have never had any problems.

ecp will hire out the tool but dont want to spend £25 if there is no need.

we dont bother with the special tool. and we dont get any problems.

Put it like this, if you are told you need a special tool, as you do here, it is a pre compression tool to ensure clutch self adjust mechanism is set correctly.

My understanding is you only need the tool if the clutch is removed and then refitted.

New out of the box it will fine, but if you disturb it after fitting you will need the tool to decompress as it will have adjusted to the required position.

But, then again I may be wrong.

I think this question has been asked previously, probably somewhere in the archives.

In theory you should be able to fit a clutch without the tool as from new out of box it is in the correct position but it can be knocked out of its correct new setting if the box has been dropped or kmocked about as I found out when replacing a clutch unit on a Chrysler Seebring.

So my advice is for £25 is it worth the extra risk of having to waste 3-4 hours having to do it twice.

Also there is a way of seeing if the clutch pressure plate is set ok out the box from looking at the spring tension of the self adjusting mechanism. Ring LUK or SACHS and they will email you information on there types.

Thank you guys for you're input, according to E3 and what was said in this thread, ive come to the following conclusion.

If its a NEW clutch and hasnt had a knock of some sort there are some green compression springs that should be compressed. If they are then its good to go otherwise you do need the tool for fitting.
