BMW 3 Series 320D 2007 - Left rear ABS sensor reading a speed when stationary - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2007

Weird one here guys if anyone can help. The rear left abs sensor is reading a speed even when stationary (between 1kmh and 4kmh) another garage changed sensor no difference. Will have more details tomorrow when we've put the pico on it. But just wondered if anyone has had this before.

Would this be a genuine Bmw abs sensor or one of those hope-it-works aftermarket jobbies???

Hi Andy. It looks like a after market one but the fault was exactly the same with the original.

Has it got a fault code logged ?

If it has a permanent code logged, the circuit will probably have been shut down by the ecu and live data reading will be meaningless.

Update is we used a signal generator and scopped this signal through the wiring from the ecu and it was the same as the other sensors. So the wiring is ok in our opinion. We are removing the pump and sending it to actronics for test and repair.

We had a similar fault with a Mini.The customer had replaced a faulty sensor with a part from ECP.But like yours was giving a speed reading when stationary.We fitted a genuine part from BMW and problem fixed.

Thanks Paul. Might suggest to the customer we try a sensor first just to be on the safe side.

Hi

You could run a jump wire from the sensor on other side just to check.

What is the fault code ?

Finally got back on this. After consulting with customer tried a o.e sensor and new plug (Â£3 for the plug. Â£18 for the connectors that fit in the plug!!). The fault disappeared no more speed registering whilst stationary great I thought. But after 2 minutes ping abs light illuminates same sensor but different code,.So sent abs unit away for testing. Tested ok. So we decided to replace the loom from abs ecu to sensor. Finally sorted even though the loom looks perfect, no breaks, no chaffing, not crushed anywhere. Thanks for all your help guys much appreciated.

Neil,

Best test bench is the car, Aidan was on the money here use jumper wires to connect the loom plug to the opposite wheel senor, dependant on results ie does it move sides you could go with the bad side from the sensor directly to the ABS ECU plug, that would have saved you two lots of postage, 'test' fee and most importantly time!
