Renault Clio II 1999 - Programming UCH query #

Year of Manufacture *: 1999
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: Dec Superscan II and very old Clip V25

I have a new UCH module to fit to this car but its the old BMT N4 type. I've not programmed one of these before I don't know the proceedure.

At the moment I have no immobiliser light and the engine management light flashes. I've had a lock smith check the key previously and has given me a four digit pin number. I'm a bit lost as there doesn't seem to be an option to program the UCH either under interconnection unit or immobiliser menus as per the later Clio IIs. Can anyone enlighten me?

I have followed all the proceedures I can find on DEC and it just reports a configuration error.

I have now discovered that the "N" part of the BMT N4 denotes its equipment level. The old one is an N3. I've queried this with Renault but they assure me that the part number they have supplied me is correct. Not convinced!

Haven't a clue other than I thought the keys were programmed manually with the central locking button using the 4 digit pin you have.

Thinking this may pair the immobiliser with key. Do any of the body functions work. What fault codes are logged.

When replacing the UCH, component code 645 (see MR 430, Mechanical, 87B, Passenger compartment
connection unit, UCH: Removal - Refitting), perform the programming and configurations in the following order:
â€“ Enter the VIN, using command VP004 Enter VIN (see Programming).
â€“ Program the UCH using command SC004 Program UCH (see Interpretation of commands).
â€“ Configure the UCH (in the Configuration and programming menu) using command SC008 UCH type (see
Interpretation of commands).
â€“ Allocate the keys using command SC015 Key allocation (see Interpretation of commands).
The removal of the UCH is carried out after the left storage compartment has been removed.
The UCH is clipped onto its mounting.
WARNING:
Do not remove the UCH mounting as this may damage it.
If it is removed it must be replaced.

UCH PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE
The UCH programming procedure is carried out using the diagnostic tool.
â€“ Establish dialogue with the UCH computer.
â€“ In the menu Special commands, select the command SC004 Program UCH.
The tool displays Switch off the ignition and leave the key in the ignition switch, then press NEXT.
The tool displays Enter After-Sales mode. With the ignition off, enter the secret After-Sales code and validate.
If the code format is correct, the tool displays Insert a key allocated to the vehicle and switch on the ignition,
then press NEXT or abandon the procedure by pressing ABANDON, the programming procedure is in progress.
The tool displays PROGRAMMING COMPLETE
Perform the key allocation procedure
Perform the VIN writing procedure
Perform the computer configurations. The UCH is coded.
Enter key programming mode to allocate the other keys (maximum of three keys). Several seconds may elapse
before this message appears.
SPECIAL CASES
If the screen displays:
â€“ Programming failed. Check that the After-Sales code is correct. Repeat the procedure using another key
from the vehicle. If the fault is still present, contact the Techline:
The code read is incorrect or the UCH has already been coded on another vehicle.
â€“ Procedure failed: the UCH is not blank. Press FINISH: The UCH is already coded on this vehicle.
â€“ The key inserted is blank. Programming cannot be carried out. Obtain a key belonging to the vehicle and
repeat the procedure:
The key has not been programmed, insert a key already coded on this vehicle.

First question is why bother with such a old worthless car ?

You have stated your car is 1999 Clio II
This will make it a PHASE 1 ( radio Ariel at front of roof )

Your car will have a BMT and not a UCH.
BMT and UCH are very different and share nothing in common.

CLIO II (phase II) 2001 on (Ariel at rear of roof) is a completely different immobilizer system.

The Reason you can find any functions for BMT on CLIP is because it was never there to start with.

BMT is on XR25 Only (Renaults diagnostic machine pre clip )
The chances of finding someone with a working XR25 is now very remote.

the choice is scrap it or modify the engine ECU with IMMO off or running a RPM module.

I Forget to say The info from Carl is for UCH, so not applicable for your car.

First question is why bother with such a old worthless car ?

I have this argument frequently with my workmate, I see it that
not everyone is able to find £600-£700 for another unknown car but probably £300 for repairs to there existing car and why is it a problem if they are willing to pay for repairs.

We are there to help and offer a service and not just condem every old car. Governments plan maybe but not one I necessarily agree with.

Obviously if its a serious issue such as an engine etc then I'd advise not to nother but then they'd already know that anyway.

An RPM module from avon diagmostics is a good idea and fitted a few, give them the 4 digit code and they'll pre program it for you.

Yes it is a phase one Clio and no I have no idea why the customer wants to spend in excess of £400 to fix it. I did mention in my first post that it was a BMT unit not UCH as I listed in my inital description.

The problem is that I'm now into £263 (including surcharge) of parts that are obviously non returnable. I'm committed to finding a solution to this problem.

My Clip talks to the BMT and there are programming options - no fault codes. All the options seem to be for programming new decoder, engine ECU etc but no mention of replacing the BMT its self. I feel sure there is simply some proceedure I'm missing here and as normal, lack of experience on this system and technical information has bitten me on the back side. Hence my post on here

Many thanks for your suggestion to contact Avon Diagnostics. Have spoken to very helpful guy who is sending out a bypass module to supply the engine ECU with my four digit code. Fingers crossed it all works!

Peter,

they are a useful item especially for older Renaults with the IR style remote fob. Saves a lot of money and hassle.

I'm now thinking if it would've been possible to use a 2nd hand BMT unit if using a rpm bypass module.

Live & learn I suppose.

You could try phone autologic, see if there is anyone near you with french package.
