Honda Civic 1.4 2004 - Steering is stiff #

Hi

We have a Honda Civic and the steering is stiff and wont self centre when driving, its needs constant correction, have tried used rack and ecus but still the same, anyone got any fix for this

A friend of mine bought a new one in 2003 and took it back several times for the same complaint. Seems it's a characteristic not a fault!

We have a customer with one exactly the same - he's had it from new & Honda fobbed him off with the "it's a characteristic" as Richard states.

This owner has also had his from new & it still works, so maybe theres something in the theory that Honda build cars without self centering steering.

Gerard, you don't say what year the car is. I have a 2001 model that had very stiff steering and no self centreing when I bought it. After looking through the service history, I noticed that it had had an unusual number of front tyre replacements. Looking further, I saw that the tracking had been set by a Honda dealer before any of the tyres had been replaced. Thereafter, there was an increase in tyre wear.
Next stop was my local 4 wheel tracking system, instant cure! Great ever since. These must be tracked on all four wheels. Presume you have tracked the front as you say that you have changed the rack. Worth checking on 4 wheel alignment, if only to eliminate it as a problem, Regards, Gwyn

We have met this problem a number of times and have found the problem to be in the centre of rack where the plastic cogs turn the rack.the 2 plastic cog wheels that run on each other cause the problem.One of iur workers from Poland has fixed a few of them by using a drill to turn the wheels on each other andf also reversing the drill to turn backwards.Prob not recommended but it has worked for us after trying replacement racks like you and still the same.Obviously you have to take out rack and strip down and use lots of freeing oil while spinning with drill.Best of luck.
