Audi A4 2.0 TDi BJB engine 2005 - Oil pump drive question? #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: BJB 2.0 PD TDI

Just bought this S-line A4 for myself on impulse(I know !),lovely looking car, I believe this either has chain or gear driven balance shafts with a hexagonal drive to the oil pump that can and does fail leading to catastrophic engine damage.

My question is, how common is this fault,I have only heard of one in my area and turned into a disaster for the garage that took it on,consequential damage led to it going to auction.

Final part of my query, in your wise minds with more experience on these engines, would I be wise to go the whole hog and do the whole oil pump and associated parts replacement and what is actually involved? or take out mechanical breakdown insurance on the car?

Be interested in your views, car has done 80000 miles and been on fixed service intervals with LL3 oil used every service,

Thanks in anticipation of a huge bill if it all goes wrong

Hi Tony we have done a couple of these, if it was mine I would change the hexagonal drive then you can forget about it, its a easy job to do, sump off think there a small retaining clip and slide the drive out, when you compare the old next to the new you will see how much wear there is on the drive, hope this helps

TPS will only sell you the upgrade kit which is strong money. Bearing in mind that these normally last for 80 - 100,000 miles, you can buy the OE parts from eBay. We explain the situation to the customer, save them the best part of a grand and give a 12 month warranty.
