Stupid manufacturer designs #

Have a 1999 Nissan Terrano in at moment for MOT, front to rear brake pipes corroded, fair enough,while moving the bolted in chassis clamps for the pipes I noticed a leak of brake fluid, why ever did Nissan,and I presume Ford with the Maverick think it necessary to run an 8mm pipe from a junction connection near to the slave cylinder on the gearbox all the way back to over the back axle terminating in a bleed nipple when there is already one on the slave???

Any other anomolies you techs have come across and thought, Why have they done this???

How about hot oil drives ( Timing belts immersed in hot engine oil)Designed to last the " life" of an engine quoted as being 15 years or between 150k and 200k.yeah right, already seen one fail on a mondeo diesel(as if these don't all ready have enough problems)that caused enough damage to to need a new engine, this at 132k .They cant even make axle bushes last a decent amount of time.....Still good for business though.

I have seen quite a few of these belts fail on Connect vans, one of them was just under the 100K.

Dont know exactly what material they are made of but the ones I have seen are really badly perished and cracked.

This Ford wet belt is a disaster and most breakages seem to result in the engine being written off such is the damage.

Also a very expensive belt to replace.

I was talking to my local Ford parts man recently and he said "when the pre 2009 model with the dry belt is due for replacement Ford recommend upgrading to the wet belt conversion!!!!

That's interesting, not heard of them before, must have slept through that bit if technology when it was released......did a bit of Googling to catch up

Is this widely used by many manufacturers

I have dealt with a fair few of these wet belts. Seen alot of them failing early.
Last one that i had to do failed at 98 000 mile. And when they do go they pretty much destroy the engine.

We now offer the conversion to change them back to chain and have also done a few of these conversions too.

Hi Peter, I first heard of these on the Ford eco boost engine in the Focus and tried to find out the replacement schedule for it , as yet there isn't one. As above fellow techs are already finding out that they are not lasting as long as manufactures predicted. If they quoted the "life" of an engine to be 75k to 100k or 10 years they would be closer to the truth.(EGRs ,DPFs Inlet Manifold with flaps, Dual Mass flywheels, Injectors ... etc etc)
