Data logging on classics #

I have several customers hiring classic cars and bikes. For peace of mind they would like to know how hard these vehicles have been driven/ridden. Has anyone any experience of data logging on classics. Obvious parameters to monitor would be throttle, revs and engine temperature, and for up to a week's worth of driving. There are many systems for short track sessions on vehicles with modern electronics. Fitting a throttle pot, accurate CTS and rpm pick up off the coil is not a problem.

Hi Peter,

Not quite classic cars and bikes, but I designed and built a logging system for a competition pulling tractor a few years ago. Yes, you can find systems on the net for short duration systems but sometimes bespoke is best. One of my boys will be driving in a couple of years and am in the process of penning a new system to log data for quite a duration. I am going to also build in GPS and accelerometers. It is one thing adhering to the speed limit...it is how quick you get to it, how hard the brakes are stamped on and whether or not he fancies himself as a drifting king!!!

I will be putting a prototype together next year. If you are interested, let me know. I hope to take in eobd data and/or various analogue inputs including pressures. Will make the unit very flexible.

Andrew,
it looks interesting. GPS would be useful, as the cars/bikes involved are nickable. Concerns are over-revving on the bikes, a mixture of gear lever positions and operation, and overheating on the cars, driven with no respect for their age. Size is an obvious issue on the bikes, but as electronics grow ever smaller, I assume that will not be a problem,
