Vauxhall Astra H 1.6 2006 - Ignition lock fault - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2006
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1600

When key is removed, central locking does not work. Radio remains on.

Known fault.

When key/barrel is removed (when they are working correctly), should the radio go off?

I cannot see anything wrong with spring loaded pin inside housing. Key and Barrel appear fine.

Need to confirm above before ordering new housing from Dealer.

Refitting housing - is it pretty straightforward?

Hello Ian, do you get a bleeping when the door is opened & key is out of the ignition? (key left in warning). The radio would usually go off when key is removed but not always. On some you can change the settings on the head unit (cd range) so that it doesn't.

I looked at one 2 weeks ago with the exact same fault, i couldnt see or feel anything wrong with the lock or its housing.
Replaced the housing and all was well.
Easy enough job to do.

Thanks for replies.

Plunger, in bottom of housing, appears ok.

Don't want to replace the housing unnecessarily, although from what has been advised here, it does sound likely. (But may be you just struck lucky and I have another fault!)

So, just one other thing before I commit to the housing, Is there any obvious visual indication that the key barrel has a fault, by inspection?

Technically, what actually happens internally on the housing when the key is removed to turn radio off and work central locking?

This is not the easiest thing to describe so it might be a little fuzzy.

Remove the barrel and look down the hole to approx the 7 o clock position, theres a little noggin sticking up in that area.
You need to turn it anti clockwise, it only moves about 1/4 inch then the radio goes off and the central locking works again.

Okay, new housing did not work. Fault remains.

Looking at the barrel now - how does the key barrel work within the housing? On inspection, I cannot see anything obvious.

A colleague with Tech 2 is going to carry out some software updates and will check the CIM.

Hi Ian. You say that you have checked the plunger in the housing. ??? Have you seen the spring loaded plunger in the bottom of the Barrel. ?? We have done several of these in the past and most have turned out to be a sticking plunger or we have even had a couple with no spring in there at all. ??

Usually a good flush with WD40 and working the plunger in and out or replacing the missing spring cures the problem.

From your post, I can only think that the plunger in the barrel is not pushing the plunger in the housing down when the key is removed. ??

Removed ignition lock, cleaned and refitted. Fault fixed.

Vehicle in next week for updates on immobiliser.

Thanks for all advice! Would certainly struggle even more without forums.
