Hi
Losing power steering with p/s light coming on, Reading power steering unit problem. When fault code is cleared power steering comes ok for maybe a few miles and then fault returns. Looks like i need to replace unit around steering column.Mother in laws car so no money to be made on job. Looking for cheapest and quickest way to repair. Is it possible to fit sh one and does it have to be coded in ?
I was lead to believe a second hand one will work but the immobiliser light will stay on on the dash after driving a few miles.
I got one from ecu testing which didn't work. Got another from bba which was ok - unusual for them.
Not a bad job though. After having to fit and then refit due to faulty units supplied i could do one in under an hour easy.
Reman units are just so hit and miss irrespective of what part.

I have had 2 in where customers have fitted used columns and both ended up as non runners, at the time no one could tell me if used columns could be fitted or not. ( even Lucas steering in the UK couldn't get the info as the columns were made in Poland )
The first one went away unfixed. ( customer didn't want to spend money on it )
The second one, we asked around more and some dealers said that they had heard that a used column could be fitted as long as the battery was disconnected and was reconnected after the column had been installed. ( something to do with can signals all powering up at the same time )
We couldn't find a virgin dump for the immobiliser chip so we managed to get a dump from a used column that had been removed from a car, We wrote that info to the chip, Refitted the column and connected the battery, The car started straight up but as had been suggested the immobiliser light stopped on, So we disconnected the battery again, reconnected it and the car started and the immobiliser light went out.
So either they can be fitted as long as the battery is disconnected, "OR" its a bit hit and miss and it depends how lucky you are on the day. But if the battery is not disconnected and it immobilises when plugged in then your left with a non runner unless you can get it virginised or have a known good dump.
We have also fitted a few "RECON" columns and had one failure. ( repair company couldn't fault the column but said that they had received a few back that they couldn't find faults with but the replacement column works fine.

From what info i can gather i think the cheapest way forward is recon unit which i can buy for 500 euro with 2 year warranty,This unit will bypass immobiliser .If I fit sh unit car will not start with immobiser built into steering column so i think i will go for recon unit. I will post as soon as i get it sorted.
