Hi all,
Am looking for some advice regarding a cooling fan fault I have with a troublesome Saab. Car basically overheats due to cooling fans not coming in when stood in traffic.
With the limited information that I have on this vehicle, I have tested the fan, probed and manually triggered fan control module on radiator. Fans working low and high speed depending on inputs triggered. Fusing for system checked. At the moment the unit is receiving no trigger signals.
As I understand it, I believe, the ECU sends coolant temp. information to the instrument panel which then triggers the cooling fans. The wiring information I have acquired may be from an earlier model as the colouring etc does not tie in with it in reality. I have replaced 'a' single ECT sensor on top of the engine as the gauge was fluctuating...sometimes no reading. Was rather hoping that this may be a cause. The gauge now works perfectly but fault still apparent. Coolant temp reading ok on Snapon Solus Ultra (reading as Vectra-C). Have looked all around the engine to see if there is a second ECT sensor, but nothing found.
The car also lacks turbo boost but have been told that if the fan circuit does not work, there is a safety solenoid that operates and stops it from boosting. The ECU is storing the fan failure as a fault too. Am hoping at the moment that the vehicle will boost again when the fan fault is remedied.
I would appreciate it if anybody may have experience of this problem and could provide me with a slight pointer
Unfortunately I do not have access to a tech2. I am getting two codes that are correct for the fault I am seeing which fan high and low inputs missing. ECT is reading correctly when compared to actual hose temps. I am happy with the data that I am seeing from the Solus for this particular type of fault. I can perform a few actuator tests within the instrument cluster but nothing relating to cooling.
With some good wiring information from Ian...fault found.
Wiring loom under the fuse box in engine bay chaffed through open circuiting fan module>ECU trigger wires. Ran new wiring from ECU to fan module...all done. Turbo now boosting and A/C back on line!!!
