Dear All,
Just trying to get some feedback on whether anyone has experienced this problem before......
This car has about 82K miles on it and averages about 2K miles a month. We recently serviced it and within the same week whilst at the speed on the motorway the oil pressure light came on.
Customer thinking it had no oil in it added some more but on restarting it made a horrible noise. It was recovered to us where we found plenty of oil in it, overfull in fact. Briefly running it with an oil pressure gauge attached showed no pressure and noise from the top end of the engine.
Doing a search on the web I found lots of issues with the high pressure pump wearing the camshaft lobe, but only one instance of oil pressure failure. This was on another TT but with over 100K miles on the clock and on disassembly the timing chain that drives the balance shafts and oil pump from the crank was found in the sump along with the remains of one of the pulleys.
We stripped this one down to find the same, broken pulley and snapped chain in the sump. Plenty of oil, clean pick up pipe, both the pump and balance shaft turn freely.
VAG list an oil pump pulley and chain separately and not the balance shaft pulley that had broken on ours. The oil pump and balance shaft assembly is sold together at over £900+VAT. Which is too pricey as we don't know the state the rest of the engine is in. However, we have sourced the same new assembly through another supplier for £250 which the customer is willing to try.
Anyone else seen this problem before? We can only assume an issue with either chain/tensioner or the balance shaft pulley broke up on its own.
Hi Sean not done one of these recently but have had a spate of them at the VW Audi specialists where I work. The fault is normally caused by the chain guides and I believe there is a modification which might be reflected in the differing parts prices. Top end rattle is common on these, normally caused by low oil press and a clogged strainer. This time I guess the low press was caused by the pump/chain failure. In my opinion genuine parts are the only option in this situation. Hope this helps. Dave.
Re: Audi TT TFSI - Oil pump/balance shaft chain failure
Bit late I know we did an A4 BLB engine same problem, fortunately the engine was only ticking over when oil light came on. Chain wheels worn to excess and chain snapped !
Replaced balance shaft housing complete with genuine Audi parts, £900.00 but comes with gear drive to replace chain and a new sump. Bit of a problem getting old gear off the crankshaft nose and had to make a tool to keep shafts in correct alignment but otherwise relatively straight forward job.
