Vauxhall Astra 1.7 DTH 2000 - SAB6 airbag fault - Fixed #

( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1700DTH

Hi all,

Haven't work on an SAB6 fault for a while but have a curious one in now that I would like a little advice on.

Fault:
Airbag MIL ON (comes on after 10 seconds after initially going out as normal)

Codes:
Scanned ECU using Autodiagnos and Solus Ultra - NO CODES FOUND!!!

Live Data - Autodiagnos only
1. Squibs/pretensioners all 0.0ohms
2. System voltage good - 14.3 as reported by airbag ECU....although it has a line underneath saying 'System Voltage Fault'
3. MIL ON

Although data is displayed it isn't valid other than MIL and voltage.

Tests:
WIGGLE TEST!!!!
Supply and grounds good at either side of ECU. pins. Wiring to squibs and pretensioners all good.
Disconnecting any of the airbag components also makes no difference to displayed readings.

Occasionally what will happen is that the 'System Voltage Fault' disappears, the component resistance values will become more realistic although the ECU does not see the components disconnected still.

Disconnecting and reconnecting the unit does not have any effect on the fault neither does forcing a code reset.

I am convinced that the ECU is at fault but was curious as to anybody else having seen a similar/same fault???

Hi Andrew,
Has the vehicle ever been in an accident? Is it possible that crash data has been cleared by a dubious eeprom flash?

Hi Andrew. This is where you decide how much you trust your "Aftermarket tools". ?? It does sound most likely that you have a faulty Air bag ecu but I wouldn't be happy until I had plugged it in to a Tech 2 to Confirm that they all read the same results.

If the wiring is checked and found to be good then I would be "guin darn't scrapyard"

for a used ecu to try for a comparison or looking on the internet for one.

zero ohms would indicate a short circuit so clearly a problem, as no supporting fault code would look like a ECU of scanner issue.

if you induce a fault (disconnect a pretensioner) does the ECU correctly report this in Live & via correct fault code ?

Hi all,

For some reason I could not see any of your replies until today...page wasn't updated properly...so many thanks for your replies.

It was the control module as I first thought. I ordered a used module moments after post the first message as it was only £10 and would certainly be a good diagnostic aid if nothing else. All resistance readings good and able to induce problems as expected.

So again, thanks for your replies...ALL good answers :0)
