Year of Manufacture *: 2007 ( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1600cc petrol
Hi Gents,
Thought I’d post this as I haven't come across this type of sensor operating voltages before. Sensor is the inlet cam sensor on a Mini 1 2007 (PGA petrol I think), three wires so I thought a hall type sensor, so proceeded to test the outer two connections first expecting NBV on one, a ground and signal output on the other two, surprisingly one connection was 5v and one was ground so I expected to see a waveform with approximately 5v amplitude, but I got NBV amplitude, so is this a 12 v reference being switched to earth?

Sounds about right. The ECU will just look for a switching threshold within the voltage signal.
Not that uncommon, just think back to the old Vauxhall Astra's and such like running a dizzy on the end of the head.
