Hi All
I have the above vehicle in the workshop and the o/s low beam (zenon type) is not working. It flickers on and off but wont stay lighting.I have identical voltage going to both sides and the n/s lamp is working perfectly so I assume its in the o/s lamp. Im not too well up on these systems can anyone throw any light on the subject (pardon the pun)I know there are a few components in the lamp itself that can fail. Thanks for any help
I have just fixed one of these with the same problem.Firstly swap over the bulb and connector box with the left side. This can be done with the headlight in situ.If the r/hand headlight is still a problem, then the ballast/ignition unit will be faulty.Headlight needs to come out for access(bumper off/released).It is the Hella unit attached to the base of the light assy.Around £300 from dealer.
We have recently had 2 x E class Mercedes in with Xenon headlight faults, Both turned out to be faulty Ballast units but they had been damaged by water ingress which appears to to run down the harness inside the headlights and had rotted the ballast unit and multiplug away. ( FANTASTIC GERMAN DESIGN ) We were advised by our Dealer that the harness / multiplug is not available apart from as a complete headlight unit which I think then comes without the Ballast unit.
I think the Estimate for a complete headlight unit and ballast was in the region of a ridiculous £1000.00 Per side. (One of them needed both sides ) I Tried to find Alternatives and no one could come up with any replacement options and I also considered fitting standard headlights, but was advised that I may not be able to reconfigure the vehicle to accept standard lights even with something like Autolgic. ??
I think if you put the car up on the ramp, You can remove the ballast units from underneath without taking the bumper off just to inspect it, If the Headlight needs to be removed then bumper has to come off.
I will Stick with my Old S Type with H7 Bulbs Thank you very much.
Many thanks for your input Tony/Andy and sorry for delay in posting. With a new bulb fitted the flickering stopped but the light was dull, turned out it needed a new igniter as well 160 euro from mercedes "ouch" but the jobs a good 1. Thanks again Dominic
