Renault Clio 2 2005 - EPS not self centering #

( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: NA

As above, the steering doesn't self centre. No fault codes and otherwise seems to work fine.

But if you make a slight turn on the wheel while moving, it stays there.

Most disconcerting.

It does have non-standard wheels (Low profile) might this be an issue? Any suggestions?

The rack is most probably shagged.

Start separating the system into it's individual parts and see when the steering becomes light.

the steering isn't heavy as such (but that might just be the PAS doing its thing)

But from what I have read elsewhere you may be right.

Will have another look when it is dry!

The nice Man at Renault says that this is quite normal behaviour on the EPS Clio's. Not entirely sure I am convinced though. One gets used to it easily enough but it did feel a bit strange to start off with!

I have had a couple Clio 2's with dry bush on n/s of the steering rack both these where noisy rather than stiff and cured by pulling the boot off and greasing, may be worth a look

we have one of these in the family and does not have any problems / characteristics as you describe and if not self centering is certainly wrong.

If steering not self centering would carry out full four wheel alignment to ensure no damage to steering components, have come across this before on many different manufactures vehicles and normally caused by castor angle being incorrect. Normally impossible to see damage, but sometimes flaking of corrosion around steering knucle can help to pin point fault.
If steering geometry fine, would disconect track rod ends and make sure easy enough to turn on turnplates as have also come across upper strut mount bearings being worn, causing similar fault, hence no fault code logged.
If you dont have access to full four wheel alignment system possibly worth visiting an accident repair centre, who will be experienced carrying out this type of check, and normally reasonably priced as there used to getting around £25.00 from insurance companies for doing so.
As you state in post.Low profile tyres fitted, this alters castor angle, hence worthwhile measuring to see if outside manufacturers tolerances.
